My husbands 9 days post his first chemo & was doing fine with side affects. Decided for me to have some respite as I'm really not well & need a break. I left yesterday he was just nauseas & today hes text to say had runs & feels sick  i'm in Spain, got here 8 hrs ago just for 4 days & now I dont know what to do, fly home. I've been sick with worry miles away from airport exhausted.

Hes got marsden in morn for kidney function test & I've said to see doctor on trials wing.

I'm literally at the end of my tether with worry.

Is this normal reaction to chemo side affects? He was ok all the time taking steroids & the other anti sickness & now this as started today

I said yesterday shall I cancel & he said no. I just dont know what to do he wont call any numbers back home & I'm in Spain. I dont even think I could board a plane at the minute, as the shock as knocked me sick.

Is this normal for him? Yesterday Friday etc eating been going to shop all week, I have the respite & this happens.

Any help advice needed.

Thank you

  • These issues are unfortunately normal……I have been in the same position as your husband but a quick chat with my CNS and a change in meds plus some new med and things improved.

He needs to use the number, thats what it’s there for.

  • Thank you. This is why I left all the numbers & now I'm miles away & dont even think I'm well enough to fly tomoz, as I'm vomitting from stress. He just does not listen & does not understand the worry for one person to deal with. I know hes scared, but I have done everything in my power to make sure he as all the contacts if needed, but doesnt use them.

This is one nightmare & no idea how I'll get home due to the way I feel. Just lying down & trying to figure out a solution & being sick at same time.

Thanks for ur reply which I'vecsent to him, but now not answering me so no idea whars going on. Not even had 12 hrs respite in 9 mths & I'm so tired dealing with all this. Nightmare...

  • Whats the likelihood of being kept in Marsden with these typr of side affects?

Its been 24 hrs of diarrhea & feeling sick. I've just spoken to him now & no change.

Hes waiting on hospital transport as kidney function test today & will go to trials wing to ask about whats happening. He said his lips have cracked now. I cant believe how fast these side effects started, within 12 hrs of me leaving.

The flights I was looking at have now sold out. So I'm just in a right confused state

  • Hi  ….. my cancer is completely different as was my treatments….. my diarrhoea and feeling sick was about the same….. but as I said I was given meds for the diarrhoea and new anti-sickness meds and that fixed it.

He most likely is not drinking enough so this could be why he has cracked lips….. if the trials unit think he is excessively dehydrated they may see the need to give him some IV hydration…… but like all hospitals they will look to not keep him in unless there is a significant need.

Lets look for some positive results from his hospital visit ((hugs))

  • I've rung the trials unit & explained everything. They know hes in nuclear for kidney function test & are contacting them.

I've explained my situation how I'm supposed to be having some respite, that lasted about 12 hrs & overseas & to let me know if I need to a flight as I cant do anything last minute & feel unwell myself now, I think shock/stress.

So will wait on calls & take it from there

  • Supportive ((hugs)) sent

  • I've spoken to husband briefly. The doc said this could be an adverse reaction from stopping immunotherapy & then starting chemo. His BP had dropped. Hes now in the urgent care unit having IV fluids etc

I've rung the lung unit & requested an urgent call with doctor, because if hes sent home hes alone is that ok or will they keep him in. I just want proper information.

Not sure what fluids etc they'll give him in the urgent care unit

  • A further update. Hes still in urgent care on IV fluids had loads of bloods & they possibly think what he ate Saturday might av caused infection, but he cant give a stool sample as the diarrreah as stopped. Also moving from immnotherapy to chemo as probably caused some side affects.

Whats totally confused me is hes had a groin x ray? Why would they do that? Not a contrast MRI or CT but a plain x ray.

Also they want him to go in every morn for steroid IV, again is that infection related?

The doctor is defo ringing me later to explain everything. So its just waiting on that call now.

In 10 months I choose now to have a few days respite....couldnt have picked a worse time  if I'd been there I wouldnt have let things get so bad.

His next chemos due on 17th Oct so whether that goes ahead no idea. Its excruciating not being home...

  • Good that he Dr is calling you as they are the only people who can explain why the x-ray was done and be able to answer your questions.

  • Finally answers. It wasnt a groin x ray but abdo xray to check bowel.

They think he as inflammatory colitis caused by the immunotherapy, altho that ended in August stays in the body months. Hes had IV fluids IV steroids today & going back for 2 days for more IV steroids. They also did a stool sample to check infection, 48 hrs to check that.

His abdo x ray & every blood test was clear.

I asked about chemo next week & all they said is will av to see how he is. At the minute hes stable eaten some soup & gone home.

Hes eaten a lot of fatty foods since chemo which prob hasnt helped his bowel, but he was ok. So doc said just bland foods, soups etc until everythings back to normal.

I suffer with colitis so knew exactly what doc was talking about.

Doctor said for me to stay put & try to relax ( not even unpacked) & should anything untoward happen, which he doesnt expect, he will update me.

I'm home Thursday morn & should never have done this, but just needed a break as so tired. But if I ever go anywhere again, I'm paying a private carer to go in, so I know this wont happen again.

The stress as been absolute hell & havent done myself any favours by being away, but he was fine it literally started Sunday no warning.
