Good morning , has anyone had recent advice as to risks of a new kitten at all re immunity , scratches, their vaccines being a risk please ? We lost our lovely cat aged 15 when I came home from hospital op .

many thanks

  • Hi

First of all, I’m so sorry you lost your cat-we just lost one of ours this week, so I know how it feels-she was an elderly lady too.

I don’t have recent advice for you as we had 3 cats when I was having chemo, but no new kittens. I’m not a medic, but would you feel able to wait until your chemo is over and your immune system has recovered a bit before getting a new kitten? We can’t always be sure about the health of a new kitten when we get one-we have a rescue kitten that we got in January and were assured she had been given worming and flea treatment at the rescue but that turned out not to be the case. So it can be difficult to know if a kitten is carrying any disease.

You might want to check with your consultant/CNS and it may be that any risk would be very small, but I think that it is definitely there when you have a weakened immune system yourself from chemo.

  • Hi Sarah , thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply . We are very excited and ready emotionally now to re home but my thoughts start to stray to when I might have full immunity back . Perhaps several months or more after last chemo ?  We shall have to be patient as more information with blood tests becomes available . A house is not a home without a little cat .Cat2Black large square

    very best wishes x
