Hi there,
I finished chemo (paclitaxel/ carboplatin) in Oct 2022. Suffering from neuropathy in hands and feet. Lately I am waking up with sharp pains in my right hand, going up to the wrist or even to the ellbow. The pain is very strong but subsides after a while and I am left with stiffness in 3 fingers and crazy tingling.
I was advised to take some Vitamin B which I have done together with alpha lipoic acid. The sharp shooting pains have gone more bearable but I still wake up at night with tingly fingers which I cannot move.
I will be seeing a physio and have been referred to a pain clinic. Wanted to ask if you have any recommendations of what to do in the meantime.
Thank you. Can
Hi Can it's good that you are going to see a physio and been referred to a pain clinic. My Peripheral Neuropathy in my hands lasted for a good few years (I had a lot of chemo for 2 years) but it did come ok. The main thing i was advised to do was get two stress balls and I basically worked my hands and fingers to get the blood flowing and the muscles and nerves working.
Hope you overcome this soon.
You could ask your oncologist or GP as to whether a low dose of Amitryptiline could help the nerve pain. May not be suitable for everyone but could be worth asking the question?
I finished my preoperative chemo on the 27th Feb 2023 and now suffer with neuropathy in my fingers and toes, my finger pain is bearable but the pain in my toes is constant I already take Amitryptiline for nerve pain not associated with this. My worry is after surgery I will have another four sessions of flot chemo, is the neuropathy likely to get worse?
Hi Narrowlight.
There is little way to know for sure. Each of us can response differently. My oncologist was worried about severity and risk of permenant if not addressed.
Talk to you oncologist and let them try different levels of things. My neuropathy did reduce after a chemo break + reduction however I think I left mine a bit late (had silly stiff upper lip and didn't want to say how bad things were), so I still have some neuropathy 1+ month after chemo end. Hoping with time it will go fully.
Hi Narrowlight.
I just wanted to see how you're getting on and whether you've had your op now?
Hi, Crumpets or toast I like both...
My operation is next Thu 22nd June where I will have a full Gasterecomy, thanks to these forums that doesn't worry me at all, my concerns are the recovery and then the Chemo that will follow, although again these forums are a great help when talking to people in simular circumstances.
My Neuropathy I would say is actual at its worse right now nothing seems to help I have changed to Gabapentin (no joy!) I have purchased some expensive NERVE vitamin supplements that are supposed to help with the nerves specifically B1 and B12 been taking them three days now and again no joy. Hopefully i will get support when in hospital next week as I wont see my Onocologist until after i believe.
Hope you are well and thank you for asking.
Mick.
Hi Narrowlight
Just a week left for you - hope that's a relief.
as for neuropathy, my GP is reviewing latest bloods including B12 as he feels he may have an idea to help. I'll try to remember to update you once your back home from op.
Wishing you all the best for 22nd.
Narrowlight
All the best for your op on Thursday.
I'd love to hear if hospital comes up with sometging that helps.
My B12 results are just in - I've dropped from being just off upper limit to being narrowly above the lower limit threshold, so maybe time for me to consider some B12 supplements? Am guessing we'd need to take them for some weeks to show significant improvement?
Hi Thanks for.the good wishes, I will of course update you if the hospital have any suggestions. So far my supplements haven't touched the neuropathy either so to be honest I'm not holding up much hope there would have expected a little relief after a week but hey ho let's see what the hospital say.
