Hi, I’m struggling with eating because everything tastes horrible! Have tried lots of different food types and generally eat and enjoy all food so any tips would be much appreciated! Still have another 10 weeks of chemo to get through! Thanks

  • Hi I see this is your first post so welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us.

Good and chemo often don't mix that well. I had over 800hrs of chemo so do understand so strong tasting food worked for me.

I had no Nausea issues so I could eat curries lots of curry..... but the best thing that helped my mouth and taste buds and take away the metallic taste was fresh pineapple and melon........ it just worked.

Here is a Macmillan link about eating problems

Thanks very much Highlander. Pineapple doesn’t work but will try melon! Spicy food was helping but in the last week this has gone too- I tried 3 different curries last night JoyJoy

  • Yes, it can be like this...... I think you have to get into a mind set that ‘food is fuel’ and regardless of what you do it’s not going to have any taste...... but you need the fuel to get you through.

Also good to remember we that this is temporary and it’s not for life..... it may not seam like this at the moment but it does pass.

  • I'm about halfway through chemo and have noticed a pattern with regards to food.

For the first couple of days of a cycle, food will taste weird.  For the next couple of days it will taste bland and diluted to the extent that I couldn't tell you what I'm eating from taste alone.

Around the time my ability to taste things returns, I develop mucositis - so texture and temperature become important.

I was like this for quite a while but 18 weeks in it seems to be mucositis all the time Tired faceAnd only just realised that yes, texture does matter- thanks very much
