Chemo Brain

Hi Everyone,

First time posting here. My husband has just stated chemo (FLOT) and is on day 5. Up until the last couple of days, he had had a very positive attitude to the cancer diagnosis as we have been fortunate in that its been detected in the very early stages, chemo then surgery and then more chemo with it being curable.

However, I have noticed that the chemo has affected his memory, concentration and general focus. Plus, unnderstandibly, he had been tearful (very unlikely him) and low in mood and very tired.

The tiredness and low mood I completely understand as he's  going through a lot. What I'm surprised at is the cognition problems. Eg replacing the right word with an incorrect one. Like saying fridge when he means cupboard.

I have since read about "Chemo Brain"

Why weren't we warned about this?

My dilemma is this- do I  mention this to him? That it's even a thing ? He doesn't seem aware of this as a side effect. Does his oncologist need to know that its affecting him in this way?

I don't want him to feel worse about things than he already does but is it right to ignore it?

Sorry for the long post amd if you've taken the time to read all of this then it's much appreciated. Thank you.Blush

  • Personally I wouldn't point out to him that he's getting words wrong,I'd just repeat back the correct word when confirming what he's said....but maybe at the next appointment mention it.

  • Thank you for replying. He knows straight away and corrects himself. I'm wondering if its simply the tiredness as its hard ro focus when you're tired anyway. Plus this hot weather isn't helping. He says he feels like a zombie.

I just wondered if it could possibly be the drugs doing this?

He's in his 60s which is apparently relatively young to have this type of cancer but wondering as he is older rather than younger that this doesn't help?

I think that you're right. I won't point it out. He's already very emotional and I don't want to add to this further.
