Best way to help her make a decision

Hi

My mum has been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer. Initially it was thought it could be removed by a more simple day patient procedure. However the endoscopic ultrasound has now shown it to be deeper (T2, N0, M0) than first thought, so she is looking at major surgery or chemotherapy. Surgery carries a lot more risks, due to her age and other health concerns. Whilst they have assured her it is treatable she prefers the surgery option. She has a real fear of chemotherapy as she seen friends become so ill with it.

My dad is saying she should opt for the chemotherapy and there is a slight disagreement. I'm not sure how to help.

Before anything now happens she has a fitness test in a week's time before the hospital will even consider the surgery. If they agree to it I'm will support her in whatever she decides to do but I want her to make the best decision and not let her fear rule one option out unnecessarily.

Any advice on how to support her would be welcome.

Many thanks

  • Hi Pebbles75, and a warm welcome to the forum, your dilemma is one faced by many of us, with many different cancer types, my suggestions are to talk to your surgeon and oncologist, ask any and all questions you can think of, as I also have co-morbidities ask how they will affect treatment and how treatment will affect them, and you could join the oesophageal cancer forum, to talk to the wonderful people on there who have been or are going through something similar to your mum, my personal view is the person having the treatments wishes must come first and everyone should support their choice 100%, my best wishes with your mums fitness test and subsequent treatment
