We have just been informed that my mums lung cancer which had spread to the brain is stage 4 and that they are going to try immunotherapy alongside chemo.
The doctor was very honest and even with treatment it is likely that we are only looking at months left. She lives alone and although she has good friends and other family members I am her main carer.
I am self employed and am seriously considering giving up work for to care for her. My question is would I be entitled to any help?
I’ve had a google but it’s all a little confusing and was hoping someone has had a similar experience and could offer advice.
Thanks in advance.
Hi Cat, and welcome to the forum, though I am so sorry to hear about your mum. I did care for my mum when she had lung cancer a few years ago and there was no help, though I believe things are better now. Cat, there's the Macmillan helpline 0808 808 00 00, and the cancer information and support page, with 2 posts,
Benefits - financial support
Benefits - for people affected by cancer
There is also Maggies www.maggies.org who have a Benefits advisor you can talk to, Mon - Fri, 9am to 5pm, just drop in, no appointment needed, I hope this helps my best wishes to you and your mum.
Eddie
