Hi,
We've heard some heart breaking news today that we getting nearer to the decision to have to move to palliative care for my Dad, aged 82. Please could someone tell me more about what this is likely to mean for next steps. Will he get a choice in where he will be? What support will we get as a family? We are based in Bristol. What can I do to help? How long do AML patients usually have once in palliative care?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Tilly
hi Tilly75
Sorry to hear about your dad. When I first heard the term palliative care I though that it meant the end was near but actually it just means treating symptoms rather than trying to cure and that can make it seem less frightening but also less meaningful in terms of the how long question.
Has your dad had a needs assessment - see here for information about those. You might also like to look at the blood wise website as well as our Acute myeloid leukaemia forum where there might be people who can share more direct experence.
<<hugs>>
