Hello. I am my sisters carer. I moved in a few months ago to look after her. She is mentally and physically disabled from birth.
After a recent colonoscopy, she has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.
I need to sort out a blue badge and motability car, as we can't go anywhere without a taxi and dont want to rely on lifts.
Is there anything else I should be doing?
She is on enhanced PIP and lives in a council property. Her benefits are looked after by the local council.
We lost our brother and sister to cancer.
Brother and his wife are cancer patients and other brother undergoing tests.
It's down to me to care for now. Which im happy to do. It's all new to me
Thank you for any support and suggestions x
Hi Kaz, so sorry you find yourself in this position. Is there a Maggie's cancer centre near you? Or you could ask your sister's CNS nurse at the hospital if they have an advice centre there. Your sister's GP should also be able to advise.
Is there a local carers centre or group in your area? They are a great source of support and advice.
Please look for and accept all the help you can get, financially and otherwise - both for you and your sister.
Sending love and best wishes to you both. xx
Thank you x I've joined a carer group, but it's difficult to leave her on her own, in case she needs the toilet. She does wear adult nappies but i can't leave her in a mess.
The group is a weekly chat and coffee group.
I'll reach out to macmillan tomorrow
