Long term chemo

Due to an infection we have just been told by the oncologist that he thinks he will change my husbands chemo to one that is more mild but long term. It involves a 24 hour slow treatment which will be done through a pump that he comes home with and is removed the following day.
my questions are for anyone that has experienced this:

 1. Husband worried about having a “port” installed as he has previously had a cannula inserted each time. How easy are these to keep clean? Is showering and swimming ok?

2. for long term chemo how can we contemplate a holiday which is something both of us need so badly. The consultant mentioned being able to take a break but that feels risky. And will he still be immunosuppressed?

these are questions we will ask the consultant but does anyone have any experience?

thanks

  • Hi. Once the stitches have healed he can shower and bath as normal. He can also go swimming. It is a good alternative as giving chemo over 24hrs is risky with a normal cannula. I would advise asking your nurse specialist.

  • Daughter had a picc line for first 8 chemos but it was removed before surgery . She has a port now for a further year of chemo. She's very happy with it. Says there is a moment of sharp pain, like a bee sting, when each chemo is started but she can cope with that and it's so much better for day to day living. No problem with showering or swimming.

Best of luck, hope you're able to get away on holiday. x
