Passing at home

My dad has invasive muscle bladder cancer and stage 4 kidney failure, he was blue lighted to hospital on Wednesday, in his care plan he has DNR in place and that he wants to pass at home, everything being fast tracked so that he can return home on Monday, I’m so concerned how my mum is going to cope and to be honest how I am going to cope. I know it’s what my dad wants and that’s all that really matters but I’m “numb” and can’t think straight. Does anyone have any useful “tips” or info that will help me? TIA

  • H Staffymama and a warm welcome to the forum, though so sorry you have to be here and your dad has terminal cancer, Having been through what you are going through, you need to arrange support. First thing Monday call your GP and ask for a referral to the hospice palliative care team and a district nurse, the care team will manage pain and symptoms, make your dad as comfortable as possible so he can make the most of what little time he has and react quickly to any changes, as well as supporting you and your mum, your district nurse can access any specialist help your dad may need and equipment and supplies. you may want to arrange homecare visits as well. It is a difficult thing looking after a loved one at end of life, both physically and especially emotionally, and trying to do everything yourself and neglecting your own health and needs will not help anybody, giving yourself 1 hour a day to relax and unwind will help you enormously and help you to better care for your dad, which we all find a way to do, as I'm sure you and your mum will, and fulfil your dad's wish, take care.
