Hi all,

My mum has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which has metastasized, she was given six months.  She has undergone chemotherapy but they are now consideringoconsidering an intensive ten day course of radiotherapy after her last chemo.

They have told mum that she will experience fatigue, but she is concerned the extra time it will buy her she will spend being unable to do anything. She was diagnosed at the beginning of lockdown and has been housebound since. She says she wants to enjoy what is left of her life and questions if she has the radiotherapy would the fatigue prevent this.

What is everyone's experience of radiotherapy and side effects.

Sadly neither of us has received much support due to the shut down of services during lock down.

    Hi Pollypeck,

We have finally got some support and the engagement of the community palliative care team.  This has taken numerous requests and finally a referral has been made as she has received her last chemo session.

It was her cancer care specialist who finally put the referral through and within days someone was on the phone offering information about the support they provide.  Drawing up a plan of mums wishes, eg hospice care, DNR's etc.  Mum feels happier now that this is captured with someone else and not left to me to complete when the time comes.

I've had the same experience demanding appointments are face to face, my mum is hearing impaired and a phone conversation over something so serious just doesn't cut it.  Some people need to see the face of their oncologist, to discuss their needs and options. Not so easy over the phone

Wishing you and your mum the very best in this difficult time.  I guess we are just muddling our way through this minefield the best we can. x
