Hi,
looking for some advice, folks experiences with different diets. My partner is 43, has tubular ovarian cancer which has spread to her abdomen area. She’s now trying an alkaline diet after failed surgery and while awaiting another round of chemo.
Has anyone tried or on an alkaline diet? How did you find it? Did it help any?
just after another persons experience of this
TIA
Hi Calvo
I can appreciate that you are looking for any ways to improve things for your partner, but would just counsel taking care in making decisions to follow specific diets which are not backed by medical science.
I have not tried this diet, as I am a strong advocate of eating a healthy balanced diet having been through cancer twice and having other long term medical conditions like diabetes.
My diet focuses on lean protein, low sugar, salad, vegetables, pulses and whole grains. I limit the amount of carbohydrates I eat due to my diabetes. I try to avoid processed food as much as possible, and don’t eat “junk food”. I believe that’s a sensible way to eat, and is proven to be healthy, and the alkaline diet does seem to advocate some similar principles of eating fruit and veg etc which is a good thing.
However, I think you need to be careful if you read that using an “alkaline” diet can cure cancer or similar claims. Our bodies are designed to regulate their own pH balance, and you cannot change this by diet. We can feel better and stronger by eating a healthy balanced diet, which can help us to undergo treatment or recover from surgery but diet does not cure the illness.
There can be some wild claims out there about all sorts of diets, some about omitting certain food groups altogether and claims that a specific diet can cure cancer. There has never been any published and reliable data to prove this.
Did your partner do research before embarking on the diet? Have you spoken about what you hope to achieve from it? I hope you’ve been able to read balanced views, including from medical experts rather than stories on the internet from those who seek to make money out of their theories.
If she needs to undergo more treatment, she should speak to her doctors to see how they would view the diet and if it is safe for her in her current situation.
Sarah xx
