steroids in palliative care

Hi, I'm new to this but looking for some help.

My dad has stage 4 lung cancer and has been on immunotherapy and chemo. Unfortunately hes had infection after infection and they have taken him off the treatment. He was in hospital for 6 weeks with pneumonia and MRSA on his lungs, his specialist said the damage was so bad he wouldn't get better and the put him on steroids. He then went to the hospice for 2 weeks and picked up, the difference is unbelievable. I know its probably the steroids but hes now at home, with careers (which he doesnt really need) My question is, he finishes his steroids tomorrow and I'm worried about how quickly he will deteriorate. He lives on his own at the moment, I want to get him somewhere comfortable while hes still mobile. I know everyone is different but I feel like I need to know what to expect.

I really thought he only had days left when he was in hospital, I'm dreading going through all this again with him.

Dear I am sorry to hear about your dad’s situation, there is no doubt about the power of steroids to temporarily improve the appearance of a patient’s condition but they are not usually a long term solution when taken in high doses. As your dad has been helped by the hospice I would telephone and ask to speak to one of the nurses who will be more than happy to talk to you about any of your concerns, they are there to help you at any time not just when you are a inpatient. They are the experts, and will be able to guide you in what to expect,, which will help you make decisions about the right kind of living arrangements for your dad.

Thank you for your reply, it's a good idea I will contact them tomorrow.

I'm not great with the unknown, I like to be organised and have a plan in place. Unfortunately this stage for my Dad is so unpredictable and I'm going to have to take each day as it comes. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, Thanks again
