i have prostate, lymph, bladder, bowl and anal cancer. unfortunately i have a bad heart  which can be restarted quite easily on small amounts of anaesthetic but is quite stubborn on larger amounts, has anyone had any cancer surgery or heard of anyone  who has without anaesthetic. i have had some minor operations without, stung a bit, and have heard of alternatives which i know almost nothing about i ask this more in hope than expectation.

  • Your heart stopped 14 times. Oh my! Sorry your end will not be pleasant. Really sorry. Co-morbidities do make things so much tougher. I hope the lung people can come up with some help for you, tailor everything best they can. However, it can be difficult finding best fit with meds sometimes. I get the feeling your case might be one of those too. So sending you a lot of good luck!!

  • But lung meds are life-savers! Aside from the cardiac syncope not just me but several children and grandchildren be pushing up daisies... Oxygen too can be essential. (Several relatives ended their days on it. Nowadays it's all more portable than it was in the past. So whatever you need I hope you get it and that it isn't too difficult. x

  • Thank you Rose I really appreciate that, It's so nice to have met someone who actually understands what it means to live with our conditions, I waited 8 months for my post to get a reply and all I can say is you have been worth the wait, when I posted I did say it was more in hope than expectation that I would find someone who understood, so thank you again, and please let me know how you got on,

  • Thank you too Eddie. I have felt very alone sometimes with it all as people in the family are quite polarised in how they deal with things – from pretending there's no problem or shrugging it off to some extremely maladaptive coping strategies.

It's difficult to talk to anyone in the family about anything regarding my health because I'm deemed incredibly lucky to have reached the age I am (quite close to your age) and there is a lot of fear on the part of some younger family members some of whom currently have cancer issues to deal with also.

Please do let me know how you get on this week and I will let you know how I get on also. (Assuming we can, of course. That will always be a given but I won't mention it again.)

  • Hi Rose, we are survivors you and me and I for one hope to be around for sometime yet. My parents were told I had a 1 in a 1000 chance of making it to 5 years of age and have had a few very close calls along the way, I will let you know about my trip to respiratory and my brain scan results which I should get soon.

  • Definitely survivors – I got several relatives who didn't make it to five re SID but in the past these things got shrugged off. Looking back at family tree past few months brought up difficult feelings re relatives I never got to meet who didn't make it beyond 5 years old. Then, I realise my sibling didn't do so bad after all. xx

  • Hi Eddie,

I hope your trip to respiratory and brain scan were okay and can help find ways to alleviate/deal with symptoms.

I have now had my operative hysteroscopy procedure which was very unpleasant but do-able (just).

Have to wait for the pathology re multiple polyps that were removed. (Hopefully all okay and no further action needed.)

Am feeling very rough – did struggle today and they offered to stop but I knew I had to get through it. Definitely need to go and lie down now.

Thank you again for helping me so much. Really appreciated it!

  • Hi Rose thank you for the update, I know how much It takes out of you, and well done in carrying on to the end, I know how tempting it sounds when they offer to stop, so good you found the strength to see it through. Now the wait, I will have everything crossed for good news, and hope you feel better soon, your amazing to have gone through what you've been through today and still thought of letting me know, that means so much to me, If I have helped it was my pleasure. Rose my respiratory appointment is now July 10th, though got MRI brain results today,  revealed normal appearances, which my neurologist was pleased to report, not as pleased as I was to hear, you rest my friend and hopefully soon you will be getting good news too, best wishes

  • Yes, Eddie very very tempting to ask them to stop. I was struggling so much that when they offered me chance to watch, which I would have loved, I had to turn it down because needed to focus all my energy on getting through the procedure. Then, every time they said had to go back in with instruments to retrieve yet another polyp ... So, so relieved it is over with now. But, a lot of women go through that without anaesthesia. I just had bit extra incentive to keep on going even though I found it awful.

I expect your respiratory appointment got rescheduled as a result of the doctor strikes. How frustrating! Hope they can help you when you finally get there.

Yet again thank you for your support, Eddie. Hopefully, my cardiac management plan will turn up soon. Or I'll get an appointment.

  • Morning Rose, I'm just happy to help, but you deserve all the credit, I know how tough these procedures are for us, I think if I asked them to stop, the waiting to restart it would be awful and the temptation to not return would be too much, so well done again, though you should try a CBT and ACT course to help with pain, Rose I have been waiting 11 months for respiratory appointment so another 2 weeks is ok, I'm just happy no sign of dementia and no need to start tests for MS, I hope you hear from cardio soon or get an appointment, fingers crossed for good news.
