 The best thing on TV?

When did you last take some time for a little relaxation, distraction, or escapism? TV shows, movies, and games can all provide a much-needed break from our worries. But with all of that choice out there, where do you start?

Sometimes the hardest part of relaxing in front of the telly is actually finding something you'd like to watch. This is a discussion thread for talking about your go-to entertainment choices. It might be an old favourite, or a recent discovery. If you enjoy it, it's worth talking about.

  • Hello Matthew (

I will start you off - but my interests are possibly not everyone's "cup of tea":

TV Shows :- I don't tend to watch much TV.(I do watch too much sport!) I do however catch "The Chase" the quiz show most evenings however my all time favourite show was "Hill Street Blues" an American police drama - full of humour, a love triangle and of course plenty of crimes to be solved! Even the theme tune was brilliant!

Movies :- I love the old ones, Kelly's Heroes. The Blues Brothers, The Italian Job and the original Star Wars Trilogy. I don't appear to connect with all this modern stuff!

Games:- We have a place in Turkey and in all the local's bars the game of choice is "Okey" It's a tile based game roughly based on rummy. We have a couple of sets here in England and we play as often as we can. If we get 4 family members together we often get a pack of cards out and play "Damn and Blast" it's a type of contract whist which originated in the Second World war!

There you go - yes I know I need to get a life Grin but you asked the question!

    Kind regards - Brian.

  • Just to add to the above post - here’s a set of one player’s tiles for a game of Okey.

    Kind regards- Brian.

  • Hi

TV - I have recently had a period of post op recuperation and have been catching up on iPlayer:

Small Prophets - absolute genius, and whilst I am typing I am listening to the artist who composed the theme tune and incidental music, a lady by the name of Cinder Wells..

Shetland - I am getting through all of the seasons - am up to Season 7. there is something about those landscapes....

Annika - again BBC, again Scotland..

I also like watching Ludwig and am awaiting the new Patience series.

Looks like I am a bit of a cosy crime geek (who likes Scotland)!

I have also been watching The Man from UNCLE (Prime) - a bit of nostalgia - but my, how things have changed since the early sixties!!

Games: When we were in Texas a couple of years ago we were introduced to a tile game called Mexican Train - this is a brilliant game for sitting around the table with a few beers with friends/family.

Films: Not so much into films but did sit and watch the Stars Wars series whilst with my grandson (aged 8) and have sat through (unwillingly) a few Spiderman films recently...

But I do like reading - a lot, and quite a varied taste. And Music - again a very varied taste, my Spotify age at the beginning of the year was 19! Not bad for a 69yo!!

    Be interested in others' interests....

(and just booking train tickets to Scotland for next week!)

  • Hello

An interesting post. My brother in law is married to a Chinese lady and lives in China with his two children. We have shall we say some "interesting" conversations regarding the way of life there.

Oh - if you wish to amend a post - just click on "More" at the bottom of your post and then "Edit".

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Wow, great recommendations, ! I absolutely love Ludwig, and I've been meaning to get onto Small Prophets soon. Good to know it's worth watching!

I'm also so glad someone else knows about Mexican Train. That's the one where each player builds a train of tiles (dominos?) from your first 'train' counter in the centre, isn't it?

If you're into tabletop/board games, I can recommend Sequence (it's like Connect-4 but on a board, and played with 2 whole decks of regular playing cards.

You can only place counters on a space if you have a corresponding card for that space in your hand. The genius bit is if you're playing in teams... you can't communicate with your partner, meaning you have to guess at what strategy you're both thinking of. Grinning

    All the best,

That's super interesting! What lead you to enjoying them? Are you learning the language? My brother is fluent in Mandarin but I'm attempting to pick up Japanese at the moment. Watching Japanese movies with subtitles is helping... slightly. Sweat smile
