Are you having trouble sleeping?

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects for cancer treatment. If you find it hard to have a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is extremely stressful, and that brings a whole load of emotions, and lack of sleep certainly does not help. I think many of us have periods of insomnia. I experienced a long period of not sleeping. I could go off to sleep quite quickly, but after an hour I would find myself wide awake again, and would spend the rest of the night getting frustrated because I couldn't sleep."

  • Hi Gracie and a warm welcome. Steroids do terrible things to sleep patterns! Of course taking sleeping tablets or strong painkillers only works for a short time because your body gets used to having them, so 4 or 5 hours is actually quite good. It is mostly nerve pain that keeps me awake but Eddie is right, if you can do some relaxation or meditation it does help.

It is not long now until your treatment plan starts, you must be eager to start it. Once you do, I hope things will improve for you and hopefully your sleep pattern will improve too!

    Love Annette x

  • Hello all

Sorry to hear we have another new member   and that some of you have further issues to deal with. Hugs to you all.

  • Hi Helen.

I'm guessing you're home from your travels now?  Well I hope you and Alan had a brilliant time and are both fully refreshed.  And you've also discovered the secret of a sound night's sleep - bunk down in the motorhome. xx

Big hugs xxx Now about that sauerkraut...

  • Hi Eddie

Thank you for the parking tips and advice-I’ll hope we get parked okay on Monday. I find the whole parking thing really stressful and I’m not even the driver!

Not heard back yet from the council about our appeal over the ticket-they will need to provide photographic evidence, and my badge was correctly displayed and fully visible. The film was ok but not as good as the previous Downton ones, but the annoyance of the ticket spoiled things.

Thats really interesting about your courses-I hope you’ll find them helpful and let us know how you get on. I’m doing ok with my present pain management, but when I’m next at my gp we’ll be reviewing it anyway to see if any changes are needed-I probably should be increasing my codeine at least.

Yesterday was a bit of a day for the memories popping up-7 years since I was sitting in the women’s hospital in Doncaster being told I had cancer. I can still recall clear as day the consultant’s face and even the clothes I was wearing!

And here I am..still doing pretty well overall, so there’s much to be thankful for.

    Sarah xx

  • Hi Annette

We are so careful with the clock and making sure we don’t go over the 3 hours. We are the same in England and can park on double yellows with the clock displayed. I’m glad you didn’t get a ticket on your visit.

I see so many tickets on cars at certain hospitals-we have to go to loads of different ones, depending on what it’s for so we could be in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire or Yorkshire. We are well travelled patients down here! Parking is really bad in Doncaster as the hospital is in the middle of a residential area and there just aren’t enough parking bays. I’ve seen whole rows of cars with tickets but sometimes what are you supposed to do? I get very anxious if I’m running late for an appointment, so we’ll be there in good time on Monday.

I’m in the middle of replying to your email Annette-I actually had visitors yesterday which is a very rare occurrence! Friends were on their way to Cambridge to visit family and popped in and we had a lovely catch up. They had their wee doggy with them, so the hubby walked her and my friend and I had a good natter over a cup of tea, putting the world to rights! I’ve known her since we met at Uni in 1980 when she was 28 and I was 18-she’s still the same to me as I am to her, but she’s 73 now and I’m 63! Both of us hirpling about due to arthritis and using wheelchairs when we go out. We have lots of memories to look back on and laugh about-I really enjoyed the afternoon.

  • Morning Sarah and don't worry about catching up.

Things could be better with LOH since his hospital admission, but he's improving now.  A couple of test results we're waiting for at the mo.  At least we don't have the parking debacle!

All good luck for Monday my lovely xxx

  • I’m really glad to hear he’s improving Gill-sometimes it can feel like one step forward, two steps back which can be very frustrating.

I’ll update once I’ve had my appointment-I’ve already been researching the surgeon online and I’ll have lots of questions!

  • That's a good ploy, doing your research, and something I always do as it puts you more in the know.

You're bang on about foreward' and backwards steps - we feel we've gone ten back right now, but also employ the onward and upward strategy.  It usually works Fingers crossedxxx
