Hi everyone, I have terminal liver cancer secondary to neuro endocrine carcinoma, I've had 6 months of chemo and latest results look positive so have 3 months recovery. I am really well and have booked a holiday to Tenerife ( got a fit to fly from my consultant ) just my husband and I. I have been looking at travel insurance but keep hitting dead ends. I have private Bupa cover that does cover me abroad but I need to also have travel insurance. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations. I also have travel insurance provided by my bank account but not sure this will cover me now? Despite my diagnosis only being made in April this year. Ive had the bank account with cover for years?
Hi
Glad to hear your treatment is going well. Travel insurance is something we get a lot of questions around and glad you take that part of the process seriously. You might be able to find some helpful tips in our travel insurance blogs.

Hi and a second welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling to find travel insurance. Unfortunately, as you've discovered, it can be more difficult to find travel insurance when you have cancer.
Could I suggest that you join us over in the travel insurance group where you'll find lots of recommendations from others who have had a cancer diagnosis.
If you'd like to do this just click on the link I've created. Once you've joined look for the thread called 'Recommended Travel Insurance', which is currently 7th on the discussions list. There you'll find lots of recommendations.
It is best to phone the insurance companies rather than try and do online quotes as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.
Make sure you have all the information to hand about your diagnosis and treatment before contacting the insurers. This is a list of things an insurance provider might want to know when you're applying for insurance. Some providers might ask for a letter from your doctor saying that you are well enough to travel. This could come from your cancer team or GP and it might save time if you get the letter before contacting insurance providers.
You might also want to check what the companies class as terminal. Another group member has previously said that "if you are told that there are no more treatment options left and/or treatment is stopped and you are given a timeframe then that is probably considered terminal. However, if you are still receiving treatment then you are not terminal." Also, some insurance companies class terminal as less than 6 months to live whilst others class it as less than 12 months.
Let us know how you get on
x
The travel insurance provided through your bank account will most likely not cover you as things stand at the moment, however I suggest you 'phone them to see if they will agree to provide cover in your circumstances.
Latchbrook is right concerning the word "terminal" and the periods shown. Has your consultant ever said terminal, if not and you can honestly answer an insurer's question over whether you have a terminal diagnosis with "no" then you'll have an advantage. It is however necessary to be completely sure about this because you don't want an insurer to decline a claim if you need to make one.
I really hope you can make some progress and enjoy some sun.
Hi ya, did you manage to get holiday insurance. I was told I had Neuroendocrine tumours in December. In jan they found the primary source of the tumour and I’m awaiting Surgery to remove it, i too have multiple tumours on my liver but I haven’t started radiotherapy just the somastan injection. I really want to go on holiday before surgery but every quote is over £1800 for a one off trip. I hope you are still well and responding to treatment x
Regarding travel insurance, it's a tricky one, especially with your medical history. Have you tried looking into specialist providers that offer coverage for pre-existing conditions? It is worth checking them out as they better understand your needs. On another note, have you ever considered a trip to Africa? It's a great continent with so much to offer, from stunning landscapes to incredible wildlife. You can find some fantastic tours on https://altezza.travel/en. Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful trip to Tenerife and that you find the insurance you need.
I would say your best bet is one of the companies that specialise in providing cover to cancer patients. You could try insurancewith.com or insurewith.com. Definitely give them a call instead of doing it over the internet. I have stage 4 bone cancer and when I tried to get travel insurance about year & half after diagnosis the quotes were ridiculous or I was declined cover. I am several years down the line now & actually get reasonable quotes now. Good luck with your treatment & hope you manage to get away on holiday.
