Am I in denial?

Im 43 nearly 44 and found a lump in my breast a week ago. I was reffered to the hospital and went on Monday, only 4 days since seeing the doctor which is amazing!

I had a mammogram then an examination by a nurse who wanted a second opinion by an older lady who I think was a consultant. I was then sent for a ultrasound and then shockingly had various biopsies taken. At this point I realised something was wrong, I had convinced myself that I had a cyst so this then hit me hard. I then went back to see the consultant who then told me straight and said its likely to come back as cancer and the results will determine what treatment is needed, either being surgery or chemotherapy. I couldn't speak and just cried. A few days have passed and I keep thinking how does she know for sure without the biopsy results??! But surely she wouldn't have said the c word if she didn't think or know that??! An I being in denial?? I have a follow up appointment on Friday 22nd which is good as I thought I'd gave to wait 2 weeks like they had told me, but still even tho shorter wait time its gonna feel like forever!

  • Hi McFarla welcome to the forum and sorry to hear how worried that you are and little wonder.

im not sure what they have seen but is sounds like from what they are saying that it looks like they are concerned that this could be a possible  Cancer in situ and you are correct in that they won't know for certain without the biopsy results as these are confirmation of what they are testing for. I know it will not be easy  but try to stay super busy it makes the time waiting go quicker and gives you less time to think about things.

I hope that they are wrong and if they are then we will be the first to celebrate along with you and if not then we will be there for you every step of the way. Please do keep in touch and let us know how you get on and in the meantime Im sending some huge big hugs your way for now. xxx

  • Hi

I can't really add to the answer GRANNY59 has given you but wanted to give you another hello.

Your consultation sounds quite upsetting - In my experience, the medical people aren't so good at people skills - brilliant at medical stuff though which is what we want really.

The 22nd is going to seem like forever away but I'll second the advice to stay busy - anything that distracts you is good. I think it's normal for your mind to be racing around this way and that. My diagnosis was nearly 5 years ago now - I was 47 and firmly in denial. If you do get a diagnosis then it's worth knowing that breast cancer is very treatable and outcomes are excellent with new and better treatments being found all the time. There are lots of us on here who are out the other side of treatment and getting on with life.

We are a very friendly bunch of people here all happy to help support you and distract you as much as you need. Have a look around the site. This under 50s group is a little quieter than the main breast cancer group so less likely to be a distraction if that is what you are after. You are welcome to post wherever you like - an give us a shout if you need a hand with anything.

    Sending some virtual hugs

  • Hi McFarla,

I’m so sorry that you are going through this. I hope that you have wonderful and supportive family and friends. It sounds so much like the experience I had. The consultant (paid to go private for the diagnosis side of things) told me that she was 95% sure I had breast cancer but that she couldn’t say 100% until the biopsy results came back. She then went on to say that I would need a mastectomy and chemo at the very least. Unfortunately the biopsy results confirmed that I did have it but it is very much treatable. I was then referred to an NHS consultant who disagreed with the the first and said she could remove the tumour, surrounding tissue and a lymph node to see if it had spread. She disagreed that I needed a mastectomy.

Please bear this in mind that consultants don’t always agree with each other! I hope your biopsy comes back and says you don’t have it but if it does come back positive please bear in mind as has been said, breast cancer if very treatable now. I had my tumour removed by surgery (breast conserving) and the surgeon could tell me straight away that my margins and lymph node were clear. I have now had 4 out of 6 chemo cycles with more treatment to come.

Be kind to yourself, take one step at a time. It is a lot to take in. I wrote everything down as I went along as there is so much info being thrown at you and it helps you to remember who you have seen and what they have said.
Fingers crossed it comes back that you don’t have it but please be assured that if you do, there is so much treatment out there and options.

    Big hugs

    Bekky
