Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing ok in this heat. I got the bus earlier and it was hideous.
I had a lumpectomy in May, grade 1, 12mm, clear margins and nodes, all healing nicely - I've been very lucky. Just had my oncology appointment to discuss radiotherapy and they have recommended 5 days plus a 5 day breast boost. This boost will/should reduce my chance of recurrence from 3% to 1.5%, BUT will increase the chance of fibrosis from 15% to 30%.
I'm not sure what to do. It feels like a small reduction in risk for a large increase in fibrosis risk. I am also single and I think if I was in a relationship the fibrosis risk would worry me less - I'd like to imagine that I will be in a relationship again one day and the idea of showing someone new a very different feeling/looking boob feels daunting. I'm sure loads of you are in a worse situation than me, I do appreciate how lucky I am that up until now all I have is a neat scar.
Has anyone had fibrosis in an otherwise full boob? What's it like? Any thoughts on the booster?
Thank your for listening :)
Hi potatochip welcome to the forum..My breast cancer was almost 7 years ago now so things could have changed re radiotherapy since then..However, I had a weeks boost and as far as I know the boosts are directed specifically at the tumour wheras the Radiotherapy itself covers a wider area of breast and chest..That's what I was told anyway..it's a difficult decision to make and it sounds like I was older than you are when I had treatment so some of the considerations you discuss were not as relevant for me. It really has to be your choice and you need to be completely at peace with the decision you make. Sorry not to have been more decisive but hopefully info for consideration..Best Wishes Gail xxx
Thank you. I am 48 so not a spring chicken. My radiotherapy will be very much targeted at where the tumour was, as I understand it. And the boost would just be doubling up.
