Radiotherapy or not?

Hi, I'm 47 and had a lumpectomy 6 weeks ago. I'm trying to decide if I want to go through radiotherapy. margins and nodes all clear and the original lump was small (12mm) and grade 1, so I think I am low risk for recurrence...I'm just worried that the radiotherapy can cause a secondary cancer and if it does create changes to the breast tissue (fibrous tissue) how are you meant to check yourself?

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

Having to make treatment decisions can be very hard. When I had to decide whether or not to have a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or not for my type of cancer I spoke to my consultant, plastic surgeon and cancer nurse specialist and made a list of pros and cons to help with my decision making.

I can see that you also posted this question in the ask a nurse section of the online community and I don't know if you've seen the reply yet. If not clicking here will take you straight there.

You might also like to join and post in the main breast cancer group as that's more active than this one and they have an ongoing radiotherapy thread which you could have a look at as well. If this is something that you'd like to do clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there where you can join and post in the same way as you did here.

Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide to do.

thank you, that's really helpful. the experts have come back, just with a different set of data and I'm just trying to make sense of the risks really.

I will look at the radiotherapy thread in the main community, that's helpful

    Take care
