Hi everyone I was told I was BRCA2 positive on Friday which didn’t come as a surprise. This all started as my sister was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer 2 years ago. She is doing great at the moment and is cancer free. She has the BRCA2 gene mutation so the whole family got tested. The only good thing is that it is low penetrance. The geneticist said removal of the ovaries and tubes is normally recommended so she is referring me to a surgeon to discuss this. I am concerned as I am very overweight. My BMI is 41 so I don’t know if I would need to lose weight in order to have the surgery. Does anyone else know if this would be the case?
Hi Nature_Lover and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.
While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Finding out you’re BRCA2 positive can be overwhelming, especially with all the decisions ahead. It’s great that your sister is doing well—that’s such a positive sign! While surgery might feel daunting, focusing on small, manageable steps like discussing options with your surgeon is a solid move. You’re not alone in this, and it’s inspiring how proactive you are about your health. Stay strong—you’ve got this!
Thank you for your kind words. To be honest I have been fine about it because I prepared myself mentally that I was going to be BRCA2 positive. It’s surprising that my brother and niece have also tested positive. My nephew is waiting to receive his result in the post. So all 3 of us siblings are positive. My mother tested negative so it has come from my father’s side of the family, I spoke to my doctor today and they will do the CA125 test and they are referring me to a dietician to see if I can be prescribed the weight loss injections but I’m also dieting myself too so I will be fit enough for the risk reducing surgery. I hope things are ok with you
