I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in August. I’m 42. My sister has had breast cancer twice at 36 and 38. I was offered the Brca test straight away once I was diagnosed yet my sister wasn’t eligible for the test even though she was only 36.
I got my results back from my recent surgery and the cancer is gone But I tested positive for the BRCA1 gene.
I will be having a double mastectomy and reconstruction and possible ovaries removed once I’ve spoken to the genetics team.
we are a big family with history of different cancers, breast, skin, lymphoma. All my siblings are now trying to get tested. Is it likely they will also be postive?
I also worry for my 3 children, they are 17,18,22!
The more I think about it the more I get annoyed that maybe if my sister was tested when she was first diagnosed we both wouldn’t of gone through cancer again and preventative measures would of been put in place.. I just don’t know
Hi Joan17 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm not a member of this group but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.
While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Thanks for your reply. I’ll look into putting something on my profile thanks as I’ve never done anything like this before
Hello.
sounds like we are possibly in a similar boat. I’m 40, diagnosed in January with IDC. Tested positive for the BRCA2 mutation. My children are 17 and 19 and the geneticist has told me/us there is a 50/50 chance of passing the gene on. My sister has been tested ( no result yet) my son(eldest) does not want to be tested yet. And my daughter (17) is on waiting list for her first appointment but has been told they are unlikely to test her till she is 18. I don’t know about you but the uncertainty for my kids is the most difficult. I’m a little further on in the process than yourself it seems, so please let me know if I can help in anyway? I haven’t had the opportunity to speak to someone else who has had a diagnosis and is the BCRA gene. I’m sorry that we have to do this. But I’ve found these forums a comfort and I hope you do to x
