hi I’m on the waiting list to be tested for the brac1 gene, as my mum has just been diagnosed with  xxx negative breast cancer back in August. She got the all clear for thyroid cancer in July and now has this. This is the 3rd time in 5 years she’s had cancer.  Two forms of breast cancer and thyroid cancer. My mums mum had breast cancer and her 4 sisters have had cancers. I’m so scared, I feel like I can’t cry to anyone as I have to be brave for my children, my parents and my brother

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Waiting for tests and then the results of tests can be a very emotional time and there's no easy answer with how to cope. Although I haven't had the test you're waiting for I have had tests for two different cancers over the last 6 years and I find indulging in my favourite hobbies helps me to forget about everything else for a while. Do you have any hobbies or interests you can involve yourself in?

Lots of people find mindfulness really helpful and if this is something that you'd like to know more about clicking here will take you to the NHS page about it.

If you feel that your anxiety about the tests is impacting on your day-to-day life, then please have a word with either your GP or genetics team as they should be able to offer you support.

    Sending a supportive (((hug)))

  • Thank you I’m gonna contact my doctor as finding it a bit to much

  • got tested positive  for the brac1 gene 2 years ago now. I am waiting for preventive surgery. My mum passed of breast cancer was I was 7 she was 37. Since then I have always had it in the back of my mind that I am going to get it. I am having yearly breast MRI. I always think to myself knowledge is power, if you do have the gene at least you will be kept under their surveillance.
