Cold silicone implants?

Hi All,

I'm BRCA2 positive and had my hysterectomy in 2017, followed by nipple-sparing double mastectomy in 2018, followed by reconstruction with expanders to silicone implants in 2019 and 2020. I'm finally done and so happy about my decision and the results. One thing though...

My boobs are always cold! Unless the ambient air is warmer than my body temperature (never in the winter), then the my implants are very cold, almost icy sometimes. Aside from being uncomfortable, this also causes the nipples to be permanently erect (and hence poking through shirts and tops).

Has anyone else who has reconstructed with silicone experienced this?

Thank you and have a happy new year!

  • Hi

Having permanently cold boobs sounds very unpleasant!

I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join the breast cancer group so that you can post your question there as well. I'm sure that group will have lots of people who have had silicon implants so there might be someone there who has had the same experience.

If you'd like to do that then just click on the link I've created which will take you straight there. You can then post your question in the same way as you posted here.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    Thank you!!!

  • Hi there,

Yup during winter I find it sometimes almost unbearable especially when its a cold driving wind. I often describe ir to friends as having 2 freezer blocks strapped to your chest.

I have experienced stabbing pains across my chest and an overall feeling of tightness in extreme cold. And once I am cold I struggle to warm up again. I guess it's the remaining skin and tissue contracting in the cold to try to retain heat, plus if like me you have had under muscle implants you don't have the breast tissue anymore to act as a bio thermal layer.

I think our chest muscles are just not used to working to keep us warm.

I am around 6 years post op from a PBM and recon. But I didn't have nipple sparing so don't have the issue of prominent nippers, so not sure what to advise there.

Over time I feel the pain from cold has eased, whether I'm conditioned to it now I'm not sure, but layering is certainly the key. For around 6-8 months of the year I have a stack of vest tops and thermal tops I use to keep my chest warm. Sometimes double layering with a thermal vest and long sleeves thermal jumper if I know I'm going to be in the cold for a while.

Gillets are great if you can find one that fits and I keep my eyes peeled for wrap around cardigans that have short sleeves that also help warm my chest but perhaps stop the rest of me overheating.

Long scarfs are also great as I can position these so both ends cover my foobs.

Hope this is helpful, please feel free to message with anything Blush

    Warm Regards,

    Anne

Thank you Anne! It really helps to hear how others this deal with this (unexpected) side effect. I'm glad to hear that, if it doesn't necessarily get better, it does become more tolerable as time goes by. Have a happy and safe new year!
