Hi

Just found this group. I’m post mastectomy (September 20) and just on tamoxifen so really lucky. I have the Brca2 gene problem. My brilliant surgeon said I would be contacted by Genetics team but this has not happened. NHS under terrible pressures but just wanted to know what it is this department does to see if I need to chase up on it. I have two sons advised them of my, their dads, condition and suggested that get a blood test done at gp to see if I had passed the gene to them.

Should I be doing anything more?

Thanks

Mark
ps my sons are 24 and 25

  • Hi

I also am BRCA 2 and from my experience with Guy's hospital receiving genetics advice is crucial. It puts the BRCA diagnosis into perspective.  I have 3 sons and only one has gone for the test.  His results were negative.  So keep pestering would be my advice.

Hi mr t my sons have been giving letters for genetic testing I don’t have the gene but by husband did prostrate cancer so was just looking on here different kind of advice because they are also wanting to know for there future health your go may refer them

  • Hi Sunsarah

When I was diagnosed with the BRACA 2 gene I gave my 3 sons the letters for genetic testing.  One of my sons went to his GP and was referred for genetic counselling.  He was tested and he has found he is not a carrier.  It is 50:50 on whether you have it or not.  He found the experience helpful.  If he had been positive he would have more regular prostrate cancer screening.  Guy's hospital start it at 40 years old. He also talked with them about how to share the news with his 2 daughters who were 6 and 4 years at the time. At my last breast screening check at Guy's we talked about why 2 of my son's have not taken up the option.  The consultant said they will if there is a need.

So first call your son's GP who refers them to their nearest genetics team.  If they have a preference them they can specify where they want to go.  I should be under Great Ormond Street but wanted to be under Guy's as my sister was under them.

    I hope this helps.
