Hello,

I have tested positive to BRCA1 and I have decided to have a risk-reducing double mastectomy.

I live in Scotland and I would like to know if there's any advice on best breast unit and/or surgeon. I would like to be confident on the surgeon's skills and experience for that type of surgery.

Any info and advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much.

  • Hi Ali_M welcome to the forum and sorry that you havent had a response as yet.

I too live in Scotland, and we have a pathway in place that sends us to Ayr hospitals if we get picked up by the screening unit, and our local hospital if picked up by GP, self, etc. I had my surgery, though not as extensive as yours is likely to be, in Ayr and I am very happy with my surgeon.

However, I would suggest that you maybe give the Macmillan Line a  call on 08088080000 as they will be able to maybe provide more detail on hospitals which are local to you and breast surgeons etc.

Good luck with it all and please do come back and let us know how you are doing as we always think of the people like yourselves having  to make these life changing choices.

    xx

    Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply and your advice. I will try to call the Macmillan Line to see if they can provide more details on hospitals and surgeons.

I asked because I am not from Scotland or UK and I would like to be reassured about the quality of the team here in Edinburgh.

I am feeling a bit anxious right now because I am waiting to have my annual MRI in the next weeks to check that everything is going fine. I will feel better once I'll have that done and got the results that all is fine. Now that I have finally made the decision to have the surgery I would feel very guilty if something comes up just before.

    Many thanks for your support.

    xx
