Looking to hear thoughts from anyone in a similar position...

5 years ago I tested positive for the BRCA1 gene. I have been receiving MRI screening and more recently mammograms as a preventive/detection method. My mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33, and after the second diagnosis took the genetic testing, and since I knew the cancer was genetic, I had always assumed that the same would happen to me (even though I knew the risk was only 50%). She has had preventative surgery and is happy and healthy.

I am now 30 and wanting to start a family with my husband. We have been to speak to a generic councillor about preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), a form of IVF which can be used to eliminate my faulty gene from any embryos which inherit it before implanting back to me. Since knowing that I have the gene, I have always thought that I wanted to go down this route so that our children do not have to go through what I have/may have to in the future. We have always discussed having 2 children, and would aim for both children via PGD.

However I have learnt a lot about how lengthy the PGD process could be (best case vs worst case scenario), and I am worried that based on a worst case scenario (via PGD), I could be having the 2nd child at age 37/38. Previously I had always thought about the health of our future children, but knowing the risk of breast cancer is significantly increasing throughout my 30s (and I am unable to receive screening whilst pregnant/breastfeeding), I could be putting my own health at risk.

I wondered if anyone else has been in this position and how they came to a decision. I looked at other threads on this discussion but could not see anything specific on this topic. I know there is no right or wrong answer but struggling to take in comments from friends since they are not in the same position and don’t really understand.

Any comments are most welcome

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I haven't had to make this decision myself but I noticed that your post hadn't had any responses.

When I typed 'preimplantation' into the search bar in this group it brought up this thread which you might like to take a look at. You could contact the person who started it and see what she eventually did.

Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide to do.
