hello

how do we get tested for brca?

my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in December and has had a lumpectomy and 6 months of chemo. Next is radiation and scans. I asked her dr if she can get tested and they said they don’t do that. What???

why not??

Any advice? My sister and I would like to know

if she or we have the gene.

  • Hi

I need to start by saying that I have not had breast or ovarian cancer and have not been tested for this gene mutation but I noticed that your post hadn't been answered.

Having looked at the other posts in this group, along with this information about inherited breast and ovarian cancer, it would appear that the test is offered if there is a pattern of cancer in your family. However, I'm no expert so this might be a good question to post in ask a nurse and one of the specialist cancer nurses will respond in two working days.

My genetic testing was done through the familial genetics team, at hospital. Ask your mums gp to refer her to the familial genetics team. They will then assess if she meets the criteria for testing.
