So due to a significant family history of Breast Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer, following a breast scare I was referred for Genetic Counselling. Unfortunately this has taken a long time to get a response to my family history questionnaire (18mnths), but long story short..... I’m BRCA2 positive.

I’m 43, Mom of 2 teenage boys with a supportive husband, but I’m unsure of prophylactic mastectomy. I am at peace with the decision for Hysterectomy and BSO (although concerned RE surgical menopause treatment options) but struggling with the idea of breast surgery. Can anyone describe their similar journeys and how they felt about this?

Also how long did you wait before surgical referrals were received? I’m week 3 now and feeling very frustrated. I’ve contacted my local hospital Breast Care Nurses today to follow up.... I’m waiting for a call back.

  • I also am BRCA 2 and my journey started 18months ago.  I am 67 years old. Having my ovaries removed like you was an easy decision.  However because I didn't have ovarian cancer my operation kept on being postponed.  Perseverance and being slightly bolshie won through.

However I am still struggling with whether to have breast surgery,  Whilst I am deciding I am on chemo-prevention  and taking Tamoxifen.

At the moment I keep talking and the breast surgeon at Guy's has been supportive. It is such an individual decision. My what if's and buts are long but I agree with the surgeon that I must be 100% wanting the operation as it is a game changer.

    I hope this helps

Thank you. From finding your BRCA status to seeing consultant, how long did you wait?

  • For my ovaries from GP referral to the offer appointment about 6 weeks. The hospital was Bart's who do not have a text system.

For the referral to the breast surgeon 2 weeks with a text appointment. This was Guy's hospital..

My GP has been good and we discuss where I want to go each time.

I had initially decided to go for the surveillance of my breasts and deal with my ovaries first.  I got a mammogram appointment in 3 weeks. which I thought was too long.

The key is your GP and understanding which hospitals have a good reputation for that particular procedure. The internet can be helpful as well.
