Lost my Dad to prostate cancer and diverticulitis almost a week ago. Am struggling to cope as am glad he is not in pain or suffering anymore but am also so sad he’s no longer here. I can’t go to work and I feel as though I’m no help to my family with arrangements that now need to be made.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my mum six weeks ago to pancreatic cancer, and I went straight back to work while organising her funeral because I thought staying busy would help. I ended up burning myself out and am now signed off sick. Please give yourself permission to take as much time off as you can, including some time after the funeral. You don’t have to be useful to everyone right now, getting through each day is enough

  • I have three grown up children and we lost their dad two and a half weeks ago.  Please don't think you have to do anything to be useful.  Just be there ... offer to listen to others if you can bear it - it helped my sons.  Give a hug ... it's worth a million other actions that others might be able to do.

My sons and daughter sit quietly with me.  They hold my hand or put an arm around my shoulders.  It's a comfort that nobody else can give.  And accept hugs back too.  Be kind to yourself.

Sending hugs from someone who is pretty sure she knows what you're going through. xx
