Hello - we recently lost our mum to cancer, after having had her diagnosis for only 1 week she died at home last week. We are waiting on the GP to issue the medical certificate to be able to commence the registration process. I’ve had it confirmed the district nurses notified the GP on the day of mum’s death - the GP’s receptionist have confirmed it’s in the process. Does anyone know how long this process takes as it feels like forever
Hi Helly B and welcome to the community.
My name is Sarah, and I am one of the community champions in the online community. I noticed that your post had not yet had a reply, and thought I would just tell you my experience to see if it helps at all.
I’m so sorry to read of the loss of your mum, and the additional stress you are now having while you wait for the necessary documentation.
My mum also passed away at home, but was under the care of her local gp and district nurses as her cancer treatment had been stopped. The district nurses were also involved that day so had seen her shortly before she died, but only family were there when she passed. I called the gp who came round the same day. She knew my mum’s situation, and had spoken with the nurses- she told me I could collect the certificate the next day, which I did.
Six months later my sister passed away at her home but she hadn’t been ill so it was very unexpected and unfortunately being classed as a sudden death, required a post mortem. This held up the issue of the death certificate considerably.
I’m just wondering in your mum’s situation where it was so soon after diagnosis that she passed, if there is something additional required it terms of confirmation from the hospital of your mum’s condition which needs to be obtained to confirm everything for the certificate to be issued? Maybe there is a delay in the right paperwork reaching the gp for example?
I’m so sorry you are having to wait like this at such a distressing time for you all and hope you are able to move forward with your arrangements soon.
Sarah xx
