What's next for the Online Community?

3 minute read time.

Stone walls surrounded by green fields

On the 29th July this year, we upgraded our Community platform. Since then, we have been working hard on fixing technical issues and bugs, and continuing to improve the site. Today, we’re sharing some information on what’s next on our ‘to do’ list, and talking about some of the improvements we’re focusing on next.

On the Community, we’ve been through a lot of change over the last few months. In July, we upgraded our Community platform. This upgrade has meant the Community cancer forum is now much more stable, and gives us the opportunity to improve the site based on what our members need.

The upgrade brought with it some technical issues and glitches that we have worked hard on getting resolved. With the majority of these fixes out of the way, we’re now looking to make some improvements based on the feedback we’ve had from you.

Over the coming months, we are focusing on 14 developments. Some of these will be behind the scenes to improve the platform, but the majority will be to improve the Community based on what our members have told us they would like.

Below is a sample of 6 of the developments that are being planned:

‘Reactions’

We have known since we upgraded that we wanted to remove the up and down voting feature and replace it with a ‘Like’ option. However, we have heard loud and clear that members would like to have other reactions too, such as: sad, hug, love

We’ll be introducing reactions soon, but before we do, we want to hear what options you’d like to have. Let us know which options you’d like to have by commenting below or emailing us.

‘Latest’ button

Currently, when users are looking at threads on the site, there’s an option to click ‘Latest’. However, when selected, this doesn’t take users to the latest post, but instead to the first page in the thread.

We’ll be making changes to this button, to make sure that when users select ‘Latest’ they are taken to the latest post.

Increasing font size

We know that some of the text on the Community needs to be bigger, so we’ll be carrying out a site-wide review of our font sizes, and making adjustments so posts are easier to read.

Pagination for mobile

At the moment, if you’re viewing a discussion thread on a mobile device, there are no page numbers. Instead, you’ll see arrows that can take you to the beginning or the end of the thread. We’ve heard from our users that this makes it difficult to know where you are in a thread, especially on longer standing discussions.

Moving forwards, we would like to introduce page numbers for threads when using a mobile device.

Improving search function

We’ve heard from our users that our search function doesn’t always work the way you’d like it to and you’d like to see this improved.

We’re working on ways that we can improve this feature, so users can find content that’s most relevant for them.

Improving our homepage

We’d like to improve our homepage, so that users new and old feel welcomed. We also want the homepage to be more representative of the Community, so anyone who visits us here knows exactly what the Community is and how it can support them.

We’ve begun creating some new designs for the homepage and we’d like to share these with you as soon as we can.

We’re looking forward to getting started on these, and we’d love to hear what you think. We’ll be keeping you updated with how we’re getting on as we move forward. In the meantime, if you have any questions you can email us at community@macmillan.org.uk.

  • I am disappointed that 5 months on I have same issues that seem to proving difficult to rectify and I can't understand  how they weren't picked up in testing.  As you are no doubt aware as I've emailed, filled in forms and posted on your site feedback threads, provided screenshots etc.  I still have these issues on my iPhone & iPad - I rarely use laptop.

    • If I go to last post I can only scroll back 1 page.  To see more I have to go to very  page then jump back to last  page then I can go back o e at a time to catch up!

    • Have to login everytimei come on site & sometimes mid replying to post
    • Text too small without zooming and if I zoom have to scroll left to right etc to read

New issues- hate the categories so much on breast cancer forum.  I tend to ignore and just look at Awake now.  Feel bad for newbies but just so cumbersome with multiple posts with same title.  I also dislike post views as this must be disheartening for new posters who see 80 views but not one response.  It takes courage to reach out and to have no response is heartbreaking.

  • I’m not sure if you are replying to the Feedback thread in the Breast Cancer Group now or to the emails sent. So will post again here.....

Hi, I just filled in the online form with the message below, however was unable to finish my message as there is a 1000 word limit! It might be worth mentioning this next to the online form info, as it’s a bit frustrating filling in all the Other info to then find you can’t complete your message!
    So I wrote.....

I’ve previously posted on the feedback thread where a message was left saying any unanswered posts/comments to be sent via this form or to the email address. I have sent 3 messages to the email address and have not received a response to any of them! I completely understand that the admin staff might be busy dealing with new clients, however. Why ask people to feedback to this address if the staff don’t have time to deal with it?
I know we have been told that things won’t change and that the sub headings in the breast cancer section are here to stay, even though many of us clearly don’t like the new format and we have pointed out how confusing it has become! Just this morning I read a post whereby a lady was asking if she was ALLOWED to post in the treatment forum? As she had been in the New to group section and wasn’t sure if she was allowed to move across! I did take a screen shot but I don’t seem to be able to add that to this form! Now I see this form only allows 1000 words!

So the screenshot I wanted to add was this....

I think this proves a point a few of us made earlier, which was that the sub groups segregate people. This New person wasn’t sure if she had to continue to asks further questions in that newbie group or in the other groups!
As well as that there are people posting treatment questions in the ‘continuing conversations’ sub group, which in theory shouldn’t have any NEW threads in it! So surely the Tech guys could some how stop new threads being posted in there and somehow redirect them to the other Sub groups?

You commented about this being rolled out across the whole Mac site in the New Year! I wonder if this has really been thought through! My calculations would be that the Breast Cancer Groups as a whole would then have.. 24 places that a new Cancer sufferer could post! (I think that’s all the groups)

I found it pretty daunting 5 years ago when I came on and there were a choice of 3 Breast Cancer, under 50’s Breast Cancer and Secondary Breast Cancer, that could apply to my current situation. Had I not of known my complete diagnosis then all of those groups could of been open to me and very daunting!
I know you are going to read this and think ‘oh my goodness, talk about making things sound more complicated than they are’! BUT how about you think about this as someone who has just been given a life changing diagnosis, as someone whose world has just been blown apart! Would you want to come on a site like this and see all these sub group headings in front of you and not feel you want to post to say hi but you want to know you aren’t alone, you just want to know how you are feeling is ‘normal’, you just need a warm hug and a kind word from people who ‘get it’! Well that’s what people got when Breast Cancer was in one group, one loving and supportive group! A place where at just a glance you could see that someone had a question that you could help with and that others with the same issue could join in with! I liked the New here group to begin with but actually I think it’s made meeting people harder. Whereas before people would start a thread saying Hi and we would greet them and Then other new people would join in and say hi too. So that one new person now had 2 or 3 people who were straight away in their group of ‘new friends’ friends that might just be life long friends....just look at the Fruit Loops and many other groups that have formed before us!
Now it just seems that each individual new person says Hello on their own thread! So they get greeted if a member goes on there to look for new posters but they don’t seem to link up like they used too! I know eventually if they find their way to Chemo/Rad threads they might start meeting each other. But there’s something to be said for those first few days after you join this site! I still to this day remember the lovely ladies and Gent, that made me feel welcome and those that immediately said ‘I’m new here too’!

Now I know that nothing we can say will change your minds BUT could you at least consider reducing down the number of sub groups? Especially if you are going to roll this out across the whole board!? I really do feel it will make this site so unfriendly which is exactly how other Cancer sites feel. I came to Macmillan for a warm hug, which is exactly what I got! I didn’t come to be given yet more information thrown at me!

One last thing which hasn’t been replied to yet and I have asked a few times. Do we really need to have the number of views to be shown next to each post? I have noticed in the new section that some posts have been viewed 40+ times and only had 1 or 2 replies! If I was a new person I would feel very upset by that and think no one cared or that I had said something wrong! Obviously I now know it’s because people read a post and then see that they can’t offer anymore advice that has already been given. But I know from experience that your mind doesn’t work like that when your world has already been blown apart!
Is there a reason you need to know how many views a post has? If so could it not be only viewable to you?

Although your decision has been made. I hope you can see things from a different perspective and try and tweak things a little! Thank you. Sal

  • I'd like to be able to go straight to recent posts in long thread, rather than work through 2-3 years of stuff.  The site is definitely clunkier than before and must be quite off putting for newbies.  I love the exchange of info, but this setup is wearying even for me.

  • Keeping clarity and transparency .... this is 'copied and pasted' from thread 'Feedback on new layout'

.... Ellen B - Macmillan 3 days ago in reply to WhatHappened

    Good morning,

    Thanks for your messages.

We are picking up every response here and we are listening to your feedback.

We wanted to try this new structure in the breast cancer group as we know this is an active space, and we knew we would hear quickly from you about what works well, and where we need to improve. The honest feedback here helps us to understand how to best improve the Community for all of our users.

We will be continuing to trial this format here, and in the coming weeks we will also be testing this in other active groups on the site. This is to ensure we're getting as much information as possible from users across the site. Once we have done this, we will then be able to make a final decision about the structure of groups.

Feedback will be taken into consideration, as well as other things such as analytics. Please be aware that comments from the site are not our only source of feedback and it is important that we acknowledge all sources of feedback when making decisions.

Myself and the team want the best for the site, as we know you all do too. Thank you again for taking the time to post here to share your feedback.

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas, however that looks for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Dear ,

I am concerned that the comments from various members from the Community that are posting here and on the other treads/posts about the Forum updated site - are there posts listened to on here and on the other pages - should they be copied into the Community Blog page that you previously mentioned - can you copy them there or shall we copy them there.... I will add its a place I don't go to, I've only gone on there to copy my posts.  I ask this, as I don't want these valuable comments to be missed.

    Your reply is concerning....

"Feedback will be taken into consideration, as well as other things such as analytics. Please be aware that comments from the site are not our only source of feedback and it is important that we acknowledge all sources of feedback when making decisions".

I worry that feedback coming from 'other sources' would effect the decisions made for 'this site, this forum, this community' ...

Please will you elaborate on 'where these other sources are from?'

We would hope the main feedback to be considered for 'this forum, this online community' should be from feedback given from "this forum, this online community" ...... not for example from social media platforms, etc.

We appreciate feedback really needs listening to and used to move forward... however, the very people 'using this site, online community are the very people that express feedback should be listened to' - it seems pointless listening to feedback from people 'not using "this" online forum or this online website community.

I am copying this to the Community News Blog ... when I can find it ... found it....
