What's next for the Online Community?

3 minute read time.

Stone walls surrounded by green fields

On the 29th July this year, we upgraded our Community platform. Since then, we have been working hard on fixing technical issues and bugs, and continuing to improve the site. Today, we’re sharing some information on what’s next on our ‘to do’ list, and talking about some of the improvements we’re focusing on next.

On the Community, we’ve been through a lot of change over the last few months. In July, we upgraded our Community platform. This upgrade has meant the Community cancer forum is now much more stable, and gives us the opportunity to improve the site based on what our members need.

The upgrade brought with it some technical issues and glitches that we have worked hard on getting resolved. With the majority of these fixes out of the way, we’re now looking to make some improvements based on the feedback we’ve had from you.

Over the coming months, we are focusing on 14 developments. Some of these will be behind the scenes to improve the platform, but the majority will be to improve the Community based on what our members have told us they would like.

Below is a sample of 6 of the developments that are being planned:

‘Reactions’

We have known since we upgraded that we wanted to remove the up and down voting feature and replace it with a ‘Like’ option. However, we have heard loud and clear that members would like to have other reactions too, such as: sad, hug, love

We’ll be introducing reactions soon, but before we do, we want to hear what options you’d like to have. Let us know which options you’d like to have by commenting below or emailing us.

‘Latest’ button

Currently, when users are looking at threads on the site, there’s an option to click ‘Latest’. However, when selected, this doesn’t take users to the latest post, but instead to the first page in the thread.

We’ll be making changes to this button, to make sure that when users select ‘Latest’ they are taken to the latest post.

Increasing font size

We know that some of the text on the Community needs to be bigger, so we’ll be carrying out a site-wide review of our font sizes, and making adjustments so posts are easier to read.

Pagination for mobile

At the moment, if you’re viewing a discussion thread on a mobile device, there are no page numbers. Instead, you’ll see arrows that can take you to the beginning or the end of the thread. We’ve heard from our users that this makes it difficult to know where you are in a thread, especially on longer standing discussions.

Moving forwards, we would like to introduce page numbers for threads when using a mobile device.

Improving search function

We’ve heard from our users that our search function doesn’t always work the way you’d like it to and you’d like to see this improved.

We’re working on ways that we can improve this feature, so users can find content that’s most relevant for them.

Improving our homepage

We’d like to improve our homepage, so that users new and old feel welcomed. We also want the homepage to be more representative of the Community, so anyone who visits us here knows exactly what the Community is and how it can support them.

We’ve begun creating some new designs for the homepage and we’d like to share these with you as soon as we can.

We’re looking forward to getting started on these, and we’d love to hear what you think. We’ll be keeping you updated with how we’re getting on as we move forward. In the meantime, if you have any questions you can email us at community@macmillan.org.uk.

  • The MacMillan community team is kind, helpful and wonderful.  However, I find the new site navigation is unnecessarily complicated.  The old site might be primitive but it was easy to use.  Now, we go round and round.

At first I didn't know why I couldn't log in, then I realised the "my macmillan" (what's that?) does not use the same login. Then when we finally manage to login, we see the generic home page with a big photo (why?).  It displays a bunch of irrelevant stuff, confusing us no end.

After we logged on, we should see our own personal page instead (should be simple and functional).  The generic page should be on the main page of the site (before we login and after we logout).

To design the login page well, the designer must think from the user's point of view.  Ask users what they want to see when they log in to their personal page.  Ease of use can reduce stress.

I think it's extremely important to get the basics right first before adding any more fancy stuff.

  • Not sure if you want me to reply here to the new categories, this is a copied and pasted reply from 'Outcome of testing the new group layout'.....

I am posting this in here and have also posted this on "Feed back on new layout" - I hope this helps my posting here ........

You say..... (each are quotes/extracts from your reply)...

""We have a great deal of other data and feedback from across the whole Community, which we also need to consider when updating groups"".

You are carrying out these changes to the Breast Cancer Group based on a). the 'whole Community' or b). the whole Breast Cancer Group Community?......

if its a). When why does the Breast Cancer Group have to suffer because the wider community has concerns with their own Group.

if its b). I can't say I have seen anyone saying the original layout/structure to the Breast Cancer Group was confusing. We have complained of 'site' issues - genuine problems eg attaching photo's - but, not about the 'structure'.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    You say.....

""The more recent changes made to this group are as a direct result of feedback from our users. We are hearing that users are finding it really hard to find their way around the site, and struggle to know where to post when they’re new. As mentioned previously, these categories are not there to categorise people or experiences, but simply help users find what they’re looking for"".

The Breast Cancer Group is being changed based on a direct result of feedback from our users......
I can honestly say I have never seen a post in the Breast Cancer Group saying they are finding it hard to find their way around the site.... I am seeing very many 'now' saying they are finding it hard to find, navigate and confused where to post.... I hadn't seen it before.

I totally agree with , when I first came here, my opening words would be 'my way of asking for help, I don't know if I'm in the right place, or can someone please help me' (I've not looked back to check, as it was one of the worst times of my life) - however, whatever I posted would be 'my way of gently saying to the ladies on here .... I'm lost, I need help .... not lost on 'the site' ..... lost in life!!

We don't want to go back to the old platform - we understand that needed to go.  We are asking you to stop all these categories - because like it or not 'you are categorising us' - even if you say its not meant to.... it is categorising us!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    You say.....

a). ""There is definitely overlap across the categories and we aren't trying to have a really structured site where you can only post something that's about the category you're in.   We recognise experiences are all unique, and there will be some more emotional support threads in the treatment and diagnosis category, and vice versa. The categories aren't there to categorise people or experiences, but rather help group content so everyone can find what they're looking for a little easier.

b). We can make amendments to the categories as we go along, if the current ones aren't working how we want them to"".

a). This sentence says it all for me....  you can see there is an 'overlap' across the categories - so this should let you see New Members will be confused on where to post and existing Members will easily miss new posts or lose the thread to reply to.

b). You say you can make amendments to the categories - the categories are 'not' working, they really aren't.  They may look nice as you look in from the outside.... please see they are "not working".

We are having to fit/post into a category - we didn't do that before.  Before, we could all see new and old posts and easily reply.  If you look at your feedback since you introduced these categories you will see very many people agreeing 'the categories' don't work.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to add, I think how different threads have been started for this ---

    1. Would you like to help us test a new group layout

    2. Notice; we're making some changes

    3. Feedback on new layout

    4. Outcome of new testing of the new group layout

All the above 4 threads/posts relate to the same subject  ..... in the old layout/style we understand it.... you are posting these in the very same way that we understand.....

However, in your new structured categories .... this is confusing, just like we are saying.  All the 4 threads/posts should be looped together - because our responses, replys, questions, concerns, upset, etc have all been spread out over 4 posts - this does not feel right - we don't know where to reply and more so ..... most members won't reply, they are here because they are desperate, they have either had or have got cancer (now you have made me type 'the' word) - they don't want to be designing websites.... they want to be able to 'read' posts, decide if they want to join, join, then post....

In truth.... I don't think many (I would not of wanted to) want to have to feel they have to go in the first category 'New here, say hello..... this would possible of put me off posting ... I don't want to be .... Hello look at me, I'm new blar blar.  I think most want to sneak in and write things like .... I need help - please can someone from anywhere help me -  If we were joining a 'Bingo online Community' then.... go for it.... New here, say hello....I'm new here, I'm form Northbourne, I am so missing going out to the bingo, I was buying 6 books twice a week - anyone else here missing our trips out!!!!

Sadly, its not like this..... We are desperate, we come here for help, support and to be lifted.  I don't think you are realising how the categories don't work.  If you look at this from our side, you need to be looking from "I'm vunerable, my like feels like its ending, I don't know what to do, I want to find someone that might be able to help me whilst remaining anonymous - until I feel comfortable to share my personal information and life with you.  For now I want you to take me by the hand and guide me...... all of which we were getting without categories .... three years on and I have only just started to give my name out, and this stopped as quick as it started as I don't want to get mixed up with another member with the same name.

An open letter to admin...... was a way of hoping you would listen.

I don't think you can see what these changes are doing.... it's creating upset, stress and worry - the very opposite of what Macmillan is about.  We are being made feel that we have to fit into box's, new people can only post once they have posted in "New here, say hello".

My final part to this post..... You might notice since your new design/categories many of the long standing members aren't on here so much Frowning2 I don't blame them.  Why not update the site with straightforward things, move the completion with the Top 'percentages' ..... fortunately, we all get on... but seeing most members are 1% and the another member is a 50% (luckily she loves us and we love her, she was always galloping about Wink )  - you did say this was not intended for use and it would removed, yet its still there.... tidy the site up instead of breaking it up.

I'm not meaning to offend anyone, this is said from the heart, from a stressed mind that really doesn't need this - but, like others, we need to speak out - so you can see.  I have nothing to gain from any of this - I am trying to help new people that follow in our footsteps - I want them to feel the true warmth and love you can get from this Group - before it changed.

Now where do I post this.... hmmm will it get noticed if I post in 1 or should it be 2, hmmm maybe it should be 3 or 4.... I'm going with 3 - Feedback on new layout arrrrghh xx

  • I think the thread, if it's kept in one place works very well, it is 'open', 'honest' and 'transparent' - which is what we need, the Community News Blog doesn't seem to be working for me in regards to the Breast Cancer Group - maybe the Community News Blog is for the whole 'community' I don't know?

I, as a member can see if other members have raised any issues I have concerns with or offered ideas and vice versa. This saves me or others the time in raising the same issues or questions over and over again.  Completing forms is not what I really want to be doing and doesn't seem 'open and transparent', this is so much easier and straightforward - I want to be here to offer help or to reach out to people that might need a hand, ear, shoulder or some virtual arms.

It's the same with emails, me personally, I am not always accessing emails and its only by chance I seen a recent email telling me about removal of a post.

Where is the feedback from the users you refer to coming from - as in, is the feedback from the Breast Cancer Group or is it from the 'whole online Community'?

I am wondering if you are having a lot of members/users, new and old, now saying they are finding posts really difficult and they are struggling where to post.... if this is the 'new layout' that is causing this concern.  I had never seen posts before saying this, only since the new layout.  (I know many do say, I hope you don't mind me posting here, or I hope this is okay for me to post here ..... these I believe are wrote like this for a purpose.... its a 'gentle hello, please can you help me - I hope you don't mind' ..... as opposite to 'real problem with where to post' - the new responses seem 'genuinely that they really don't know where to post'.  For fear of repeating myself the categories 'are now very confusing' any one post could be posted in any category and I am sure get overlooked.

No offence is meant with any of my thoughts, ideas or suggestions. I am talking from my own personal opinion and from using this site - my passion is for this site and for new people that sadly join here to get the same wonderful care and support as what I had - I know putting us into categories to post is taking this previous kind of experience away xx

  • It's nice to see the little 'drop down cards' that come on when you hover your mouse over them have been updated.

Its good to see the '0' Points and the Top 1% (or Top 50% for some people) have now after months been removed.  We don't want to be in completion with each other.  Far better - Thank you x

  • I think any issues raised on here, we should copy and paste to the 'Community News Blog' page (it was new to me - it says 'what's next for the online community' hmmmm  I think maybe, hope our voices need to be heard there too.  It is all distracting again so many places to want to post.

I do think this will help all see exactly how many find this new layout totally confusing - its not 'one' of us, it is many of us, I can only think of one person that actually likes the new layout - the majority do seem to be finding this new layout confusing and missing out on helping others - less is definitely more.

I will try and add a link to the Community Blog... put hahaha don't hold your breath that it will work....

Drum roll please..... will this work arrrghhh....

    https://community.macmillan.org.uk/blogs/b/community_news/posts/what-s-next-for-the-online-community

Please post thoughts and comments in both places, sorry, i just feel the Community Blog is maybe where most ears will listen Pray

, I agree with you. I came here for help and amazing help I received from lovely ladies and gents... now I stay here to pay if forward so to speak.... but, with this new set up its difficult, before I would see posts whilst on my way to the Awake thread and would reply.... now I am not seeing them and do go looking for them - that is the nature of humans.

I will copy and post this to the Community Blog xxx

This is a link to one of the pages/threads discussing the new layout ...
