Waiting on biopsy results

Hi everyone,

I was referred by GP for heavy bleeding and unusual discharge 3 weeks ago to gynaecology.  Got appointment on Wednesday morning for scan which showed endometrium thickness of 25.6 mm with few cystic areas  and a pipelle biopsy was performed.  She said I would get an appointment for hysteroscopy under General anaesthetic.

I literally only left the hospital and recieved a phone call offering me appointment for Friday and a pre op appointment for Thursday the day before.  It's now Sunday and its only hitting me now how quick this all happened.  I left hospital yesterday as I had to stay overnight.  I'm 58 years old and my mind is in overdrive.  They performed the hysteroscopy and took another biopsy.  The only thing I was told was that I would be contacted with the results.  I dont know  why I didn't ask more questions but I just wanted to get home . If the endometrium has cystic areas does that mean it isn't cancer or could it still be cancer ?  I'm worried sick here now as it all just happened so quick.

  • Hi Laura12

    Welcome to the Womb group.

It can feel like it is all happening quickly and that is what the urgent pathway is about. Where there are symptoms that in some people could lead to a diagnosis, they try to rule out the most serious potential causes (cancer) first. Having things done quickly is good news as it means that you will hopefully know what you are dealing with sooner.

Cystic areas in the endometrium do not mean there is cancer but also they can not rule it out. So when they did the ultrasound they are describing what was seen visually. They noted that your endometrium is thicker than they would ideally  expect. This hyperplasia can be of different types and some are less concerning than others. The hysteroscopy was to take a closer look inside the womb and possibly enabled more targeted biopsies to be taken. However a hysteroscopy is still a visual description.

The biopsies are the important things- only a biopsy can confirm or rule out cancer as a cause for your symptoms.

I hope that you do not have to wait too long for the results to come back. There can be quite a variation between hospitals. Mine were back around a week after the biopsies but I know others on here have waited longer.

It can be really hard to wait for results and if it would help to talk things through then please do give the Support Line a call.

  • Hi Laura12

I feel the same as you, my next procedure is the hysteroscopy which I'm having done without anastasia as the wait for quite long and they say most people have it done without!  Hope i can manage the pain, even the nurse told me it would be horrendous.  I had a pipelle biopsy taken 11 days ago but haven't had those results through yet.

The speed from the transvaginal scan which showed 17mm lining to the biopsies to tomorrow all seems to have gone into a blur and very quick but we should be thankful that we are being seen so quickly really.

I'm 57 and three years post menopausal and my mind all been all over the place.

Fingers crossed you get your results through soon and that they will be good news for you.

    Sending hugs x

  • Thank you Jane ,

Feeling bit more settled today . My care app letter said I was to have a hysteroscopy and polypectomy , so when my discharge letter said a hysteroscopy and pipelle biopsy was performed i started thinking the worst.

  • Thank you Globos,

Sending big hugs to you too and hope you get good news too  xx

  • It is normal for them to take a biopsy whilst in there. Its routine. Hopefully you will get your results through very soon.

  • Hi Laura12

I got my biopsy results at my hysteroscopy appointment.  Thankfully very good news for me. I still had the hysteroscopy and also had a coil fitted to keep my womb lining down.  Didn't have GA it was uncomfortable but not unbearable, just like the pillete biopsy really, the saline solution feels abit funny and they let it run onto the floor which is a bit weird.  There were 4 people in the room with me, all lovely and very caring.  Feel like I have period pains in tummy today but with paracetamol im coping fine.  The whole procedure was less painful and less daunting than I thought it was going to be after reading some reports online.

I hope you get good news too, sooner rather than later but im here for you if you want to ask me anything or message.  Everything crossed for you hun.  Fingers crossed
