Hi, possible cancer of endometrium

Had some abdominal pain, tests ruled out ovarian and bowel cancer, but pelvic ultrasound found thick endometrium at 20 cm and many cysts. Put on 2 week urgent cancer investigation pathway, but oh wait, there’s a backlog, so there isn’t actually a 2 week urgent pathway. It’s a month till biopsy can be done. I’m 70, so it looks likely a hysterectomy will be the outcome.

  • Hi WirralWidow

    Welcome to the group.

I am sorry to hear that you have been found to have a thickened endometrium and many cysts.

I understand that this is a worrying time and you want to get the biopsy done and to know for sure what is going on. It can feel tough to wait for another month. Have you checked whether they have a short notice cancellation list? It may be worth asking.

If the biopsy does show cancer is present then the next step would likely to be a CT/MRI scan. From this they can give a provisional stage and grade (from the biopsy) and this is what they use to plan treatment. For most ladies this is a hysterectomy where it is medically possible. For an very early stage and grade the surgery may be enough. Some people may also need some follow up treatment.

However hyperplasia can have different causes and cancer is only one of them. Cysts also may turn out to be benign.

If it does turn out to be endometrial cancer then it is normally a very treatable cancer when caught at an early stage.

If there is anything you want to ask about, please do so.

It can be hard waiting for a possible diagnosis so if you feel like talking things through would help, then please do give the Support Line a call. They are there from 8am-8pm daily.
