Hysterectomy and Prolapse Surgery at the same time

I’ve just been given a diagnosis of womb cancer today.  Following a biopsy and hysteroscopy I’ve been told it is stage 1 and grade 1.  Have been booked in for a laparoscopic hysterectomy in two weeks.

My situation is complicated that I also have a prolapse of my womb.  The gynaecologist has said that a prolapse repair can be done at the same time as the hysterectomy but that the recovery time will be longer for me.

Has anyone had a prolapse repair at the same time as their hysterectomy?  I’m not sure what to do.  The prolapse isn’t bothering me too much, but getting both done at the same time would save further surgery at a later date.  He’s phoning me on Monday for my answer.

  • Sounds like a good buy one get one free offer! Wise to put the general anaesthetic to good use! If it was me I’d be saying “might as well while you’re in there!” My recovery from my laparoscopic hysterectomy was really quite quick so for me a little bit longer wouldn’t have been an issue.

  • Hi Ginnie

Welcome to the womb group. I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of womb cancer.

It does seem a good option to have the prolapse repair done at the same time. One surgery, one anaesthetic, one recovery. Even with a slightly longer recovery - you would be taking it easy after the hysterectomy normally. My hysterectomy recovery went well and didn't have any issues.

If you wanted to talk it through, perhaps give the Support Line a call and speak with one of the nurses.
