Hi Everyone. I’m 54 not on HRT, I had PMB started Sunday phoned doc Monday luckily she saw me, and said I needed urgent referral, hospital rang me yesterday I have an appointment Mon, I haven’t told anyone and I’m not coping at all, I have a lifetime holiday booked 21Aug and can’t bring myself to tell my husband. I had a lot of problems 2years ago where I was told I had adenomyosis my doctor at the time said she would refer me to a gynaecologist but never heard back I was then fine so never chased it up, and thought it wasn’t necessary, I’m also still bleeding so I go to hospital appointment if I’m bleeding will they examine me while bleeding? They told me to take painkillers before appointment? No idea why? I lost my mum and aunt to ovarian cancer at early ages and it’s all I can think of. I also asked about blood test at GP's but told I didn’t need it, Sorry for vent probably not making much sense but any advice welcome xx
Hello
Welcome to the Womb group. I am sorry to hear of your PMB but you have done absolutely the right thing in contacting your doctor.
For any PMB it is normal to be referred for further testing on an urgent 2ww cancer pathway. It does not mean that there is cancer present, more that it needs to be ruled out. Something is causing the bleeding and they need to find out why.
What normally happens is the first step is an ultrasound to amongst other things check the endometrial thickness. The next step can then be a hysteroscopy (camera test) and biopsy. As they have told you to take pain killers before the appointment it may well be that they are planning to do the hysteroscopy and/or a biopsy then. You could call them and ask for clarification.
if you are bleeding they will still examine you.
At this time a blood test would not normally be done. There is a marker that they tend to use more for ovarian cancer (CA125) but I would not expect them to do it yet.
The previous adenomyosis (where the endometrial tissue grows into the muscular wall) may or may not be connected to the PMB but what they are more concerned about doing is to rule out cancer as a cause. They always try to rule out the most potentially serious cause first and then work their way onwards.
I can understand it is a really worrying time and would suggest trying to speak to your husband. You will need support going through this. Perhaps you can show him this? You could say simply that you have had some bleeding and it needs checking.
I had the results of my ultrasound the following day and the results of my biopsy within a week. Hopefully you should have a much better idea of what is causing the bleeding before your holiday. I would however be inclined to mention it to them so they are aware.
If you feel like chatting things through would help, then please do give the Support Line a call. They are there from 8am-8pm daily.
Good luck for Monday and in the meantime if there is anything you need, then please do ask.
Jane
Thank you for your reply, I feel a bit better reading it. X
I would, as Jane says - ask what exactly they are doing at the appointment. Generally it's an ultrasound, followed by a hysteroscopy and biopsy. Many women need more than a few painkillers for this, so also ask about having local anaesthetic and possibly gas & air for the procedure. It does help you through - and good luck.
