Scared, don't know where to start, bleeding and pain post menopause

Where do I start. I had a sacro hysteropexy with mesh in 2020 and not really had any issues. I did feel like I had another prolapse in 2023 but the consultant did an exam and said everything seems fine. She gave me estrogen pessaries, I am also on Everol conti 50mg patches and have been for 12 years due to early menopause. I have had the odd twinges down below but in Dec noticed the odd period type pain. I resigned from work in Oct as my dad was ill, my daughter was getting married and I felt exhausted. In fact I still do. Dad is better and the wedding was amazing.

Two weeks ago I got another bout of period pains and a sharp pain in my right hand side over a few days and thought I need to see the GP, as I haven't had a periods for 3 years.

I delayed making the appointment as I got a really bad headcold. This week (Tuesday) as I wiped I had brown discharge and have ever since. I made an appointment to see the GP who mentioned cancer and put me on the 2 week scan route. I have my appointment on Monday.

I keep going breathless, have for a while but put it down to anxiety. I feel unwell and have back ache and lower abdominal ache. All worse and constant since the bleeding started. I have lost about 4lb in 3 weeks and have hardly any appetite.

I have been in tears all day. I am totally scared.

Any advice.

  • Hello JoaB19

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear that you have been having these symptoms and are feeling really worried.

It is very natural to feel scared but the main thing is that you have had these symptoms and they are getting checked out. If anything is going on then it is better to find it sooner.

It is normal to be put on the urgent cancer pathway with your symptoms. The brown discharge and pain could have reasons that are not cancer but it is always important for them to rule out the most serious potential causes first and that is what they are doing.

For me the first thing that happened was an ultrasound. This included a transvaginal one. From the scan they could see something was not right so I was called in for a biopsy and it was that which confirmed the cancer. After that I had an appointment with a consultant.

Hopefully the scan will give a clearer picture of what is going on. I wish you well for Monday and in the meantime if there is anything you need, you know where we are.

We do have the Support Line available if you need to talk things through. They will be back 8am-8pm tomorrow. You can also contact Macmillan via online chat if that is something you would prefer. Sometimes just talking to someone who understands can help.

  • Thanks Jane, I think the fact I have constant discomfort and sometimes pain is a constant reminder. I am trying to stay positive but it's hard.
