How did the consultant break the news to you?

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering how you first received the news that you had cancer.

My consultant said: 'I've got your biopsy results. It's bad news, I'm afraid. Have you got someone with you?'

  • Hi I was diagnosed in the early days of Covid. I'd had to attend all tests/scans alone then got a call inviting to see a surgeon in Nottingham 80 miles away. I mentioned I thought it a long way to go to be to told to come back in 6 months and was told by the nurse, "Oh no, you'll be having surgery, you've got cancer" Not the nicest way to find out!

    Hugs, Barb xx

  • Hi Sabine, I was told I’d get my results by phone two weeks’ after my hysteroscopy. It went over that so I chased it and got a phone call two days later from a registrar who fired all the info at me at top speed (that’s how it felt anyway) and I had to ask her to stop for a moment as her voice and words felt like an express train going through a station without stopping and I couldn’t absorb it all because I was reeling from the shock. She said of course and was actually quite caring and efficient, it was just the matter of fact tone and speed of delivery that knocked me sideways. She gave me the type and grade, told me I’d need an MRI and chest X ray for staging, and also gave me the phone number for my CNS and advised me to phone them for support. So what she said was good, but it was all a bit overwhelming to get it all by phone and at lightning speed.

  • Hi Sabine,

I guessed I had cancer of the womb quite early on, my gp was useless and I mean useless,  I couldn't see a doctor face to face,  econsult was down too,  so, after over 150 days of bleeding and getting no help I actually stormed into my GP surgery to demand I see someone,  the receptionist told me "oh it's menopausal that's all, but I'll get someone to ring you" I waited 4 weeks for a doctor to ring me,  she was mortified when I told her how long I've been bleeding for, blood test's were arranged, 6 wks wait! Luckily my manager is qualified to take bloods (care home) so within a week of the hospital receiving them I get a text from my GP surgery to ring them urgently,  I rang up straight away only to be told my bloods were fine apart from a  spike,  which she couldn't tell me about,  appointment was eventually made,  an hour before my appointment I get a call from a  doctor,  saying she hopes everything goes well for my future treatment,  I had it on loud speaker and hubby was sat listening at the side of me,  I asked what treatment and they hung up,  at my appointment i asked my doctor what had spiked, she shifted in her seat and said I think it was cholesterol but I can't find it now,  so I asked about the phone call,  she said there's no record of any call being made,  had a  hysteroscopy the following week with biopsies,  a week later MRI scan, 2 wks later I was called to see my consultant,  so I'm sat in the waiting room,  hubby was working away so I was on my own,  the consultant was running 2 hours behind,  finally get called in and the consultant said who's with me,  I said no one,  she just came out with it,  she said you've got womb cancer and you're going to need  a hysterectomy,  I can't remember how I got out of the hospital,  I didn't know which way was up or down,  I tried to ring  a taxi,  3 hours wait,  I ended up catching the bus into town,  I remember I was going to upgrade my mobile and I remember thinking "is it worth it,  I might not survive 2 yrs" once home I had to ring the court as I was due to do jury service,  when the lady asked me why I couldn't do it I burst out laughing and said you couldn't make this s*it up and told her what had happened earlier,  she was lovely, the next 5 wks went by in a blur and then I had surgery,  they found I had cervical cancer as well,  I start radiotherapy next week,  3 sessions of Brachytherapy xxx

  • Hi Cloe, so pleased for you that they were able to remove the tumour and that you are well now. I'm OK, thank you. I'll be pleased to get my hysterectomy, hopefully soon.

  • Hello LittleRunner, That is so distressing to find out that way. I hope you are OK now.

  • Hi Mrs BJH, that's awful. I'm so sorry. What a shock that must have been. Big hug. x

  • Hi Proudnanny, what a nightmare for you. What a carry-on, that's bordering on negligence. I hope you will get better care now. Good luck with treatments. Fingers crossed it will be all plain sailing from now on. Big hug. x

  • Hi Sabine, I’d been told my biopsy was ok and I just needed to get the polyps removed and a mirena coil fitted. When I went to get them removed after the procedure the consultant said she wasn’t happy with what she’d seen on the camera and thought it was definitely cancer. She said shall we call your husband in and as soon as I saw him I burst into tears. I think if I hadn’t been told all was well I’d have been more receptive to a cancer diagnosis but it came right out of the blue xx

  • Proud nanny i think you need to change GP and report them to the GMC. Shocking treatment. Nothing will change unless they’re held accountable. Hope your treatment goes well xx

  • Hi Smellybasset, what a blow for you after getting the first lot of news. It just shows you how easy it is for it to go undetected. Just as well you got the right diagnosis in the end. Thinking of you and hope it all goes well. Xx
