Hi everyone,

Well, at 2am this morning I got a bit of a scare. I woke up feeling slightly damp in lower regions and thought I’d been childish and had a major whoops moment. I headed into the bathroom still half asleep and kicked off my pj trousers. I got quite a shock when I saw a large dark red blood clot lying on my pjs and realised that I’d been bleeding. After cleaning myself up I phoned NHS24,  almost certain that I was going to be  heading back into hospital. The nurse asked all sorts of questions and then came to the decision that I didn’t need to go to hospital as it was probably old bleeding from the surgery. I was told to put a pad on and keep an eye on it, any further symptoms or fresh bleeding I was to phone them back right away. I was so relieved that I didn’t have to go to hospital.

I’d had minimal bleeding after surgery and nothing at all after the catheter removal so waking up to that 3 weeks after surgery really gave me a fright. I’d been feeling pretty good and hadn’t experienced any of the pain etc some of the ladies on here had experienced and because of that  I may have been doing a wee bit more than I should. Talk about wake up call. I’m now taking things a fair bit easier. Just thought I’d post what happened on here as a wee warning to anyone in the same situation. Please be careful and don’t end up scaring the living daylights out of yourself like me.

Take Care

  • Hi Angie,

I had a similar thing happen at 2 weeks post surgery. I hadn’t had any bleeding at all post op so was surprised when I started bleeding W weeks in. It lasted 2 weeks. I rang the hospital and my consultant rang me and explained that it could be that a stitch may have dissolved too quickly. I may have overdone it. Of course being on the blood thinning injection wouldn’t have helped. It all settled and I made an uneventful recovery.

I hope your recovery progresses gently.

    Best wishes

  • Hi , Angie you did the right thing contacting the hospital about it. Yes you can get some bleeding a few weeks after the op which can indeed be caused by a number of things and yes if it happens always best to report it. Its definitely important to to not over do things,

I know from my own experiences that I felt fantastic after my op although I got exhausted quickly but I did forget myself a number of times and ended up throwing a stitch, now that was a strange feeling. I was doing really well recovering from the op but i was mega frustrated that underlying problems started up and has caused all kinds of extra complications for my recovery and also looking for signs of recurrence. This is why my oncology team haven’t discharged me from formal reviews yet. In July it will be 4 years since my op blimey that’s coming around fast, yet I never expected everything that has and is happening. Best advice always is to try not over doing things, rest when needing too and don't beat yourself up if your struggling neither, we are all different and the way our bodies behave is different too.

Sending you a gentle bear hug Bear and i hope you will not have any more scares fingers crossed Fingers crossed

  • Hi Angie, I had the same thing happen to me. I had no bleeding after my op and really very little trouble with anything. Then one night I went to the loo before going to bed and discovered the toilet bowl was full of my blood.   I went to bed with a pad on, and lay awake worrying. Eventually needed to go to the loo again and same thing.  But after that everything was OK. I phoned my CNS first thing and she said that it happens sometimes, could be a stitch dissolving.  I’ve had no problems since ( my op was at the end of August).  As you say it’s very frightening, but seems it’s just one of those things that some of us experience.  Hope you are OK now, but don’t rush back and start overdoing things.  After all, we've had major surgery so be kind to your poor old body!

  • Hi Angie,

I think it’s pretty normal to have a bleed a few weeks after surgery, my surgeon warned me not to panic if I did. I too had no bleeding after surgery, but started after 5 weeks, it’s apparently the release of the old blood once your sutures dissolve. You did right by getting checked out though.

Take it easy, easier said than done in my case unfortunately xx
