After a very difficult 4 days I’m home

well, difficult for me. I’m really not impressed by the way the staff were with the medication and I was in agony last night. But I’m home now. Will have to call tomorrow as been given discharge letter saying one more day of antibiotics, but a bottle with probably 5 days worth in. No paracetamol, I know it’s easy to get but  it meant we had to go a very bumpy way home to get to a chemist that was open. Bottle of lactulose with no measure in. I’ve done a bit of guess work for tonight on that one and as I’m only taking total of 2 codeine a day I’m not too bothered.

realised there is no way I’m going to get into the bath for a shower, I can only just get up the stairs, so hubby off for a stool to use in front of the sink for now. I’ve got some special fast healing dressing on. It’s either working really well or I’m allergic to it as the area is as itchy as hell. Got to get an appointment with the nurse this Thursday to have the dressing taken off. Well, that could be interesting trying to get an appointment with that short a notice.

But I have done the injection. It now stings a bit, and some of the liquid leaked out. But I did it.

    Hi Nina

Glad to hear you are home. It's extremely frustrating waiting for medication especially pain relief - not enough nurses and too many patients is usually to blame. The itching could be caused by allergy or could be due to the wound healing. You could ask about this when you contact them about your medication.

Hopefully there shouldn't be a problem getting a short notice appointment under the circumstances. to have the dressing removed.

I hope everything has been ok with the rest of the family especially your youngest.

    Hoping you feel better soon.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you. I've spoken with the service manager of youngest support agency. She called me to say she is going to move Hannah with another service user who has lots of support hours which Hannah can effectively share. They appear to like similar things and it means Hannah will be kept busy.

  • Hi Nina,

Glad you are home. I had times when the injection stung, other times it didn't and I can't tell what made the difference! I held the bit of flab while husband put it in! I think I would have dithered around a lot more than he did!! xxxx

Hi nina. Glad you are back home in familiar surroundings. Just make sure you rest now. I too am allergic to adhesive on the dressings and they prescribed me some mediderma s aerosol which is like a barrier film in a spray, also comes as cavilon non sting film spray. They spray the area after cleaning the wound then let it dry thirty seconds before placing the dressing on. I find it helps as most dressings and even mepore tape has me trying not to rip my body to pieces with the itching. The itching could also be caused by the area healing.  Yes,the injections stung a bit but I couldn't find a way round this. They were necessary so I just went in with a deep breath before injecting myself, thinking that's one less to go. I had great pleasure in slamming the lid of the sharps bin shut when they were all done and over with! I hope you don't experience too much pain..it should wear off soon. God bless. Love lamb.xx

  • Great to hear that you are home Nina and in spite of temporary discomfort and difficulties.  I'd say the key is to get adequate pain relief cos in my experience being comfortable makes everything seem better.  And I've also found that ibuprofen or paracetamol helps relieve itching as well as aches and pains.  Xx

  • I hope you will start to feel better now you are home Nina and hopefully get the pain under control.  I was in for 5 days and didn't have the best time!  I certainly felt a lot better being at home in my own surroundings and my own bed.  I got used to doing the injections, even though I held my breath each time I did it! I had to do them myself as I didn't want my husband to do them!

    Hugs, Lesley xx

Pleased you see you are home Nina.

My tummy generally feels tight and itchy which I think is the bloating and stitches in my case.

I'm doing the injections too and it does sting a little after. I actually find the injections easier than the giant horse pills I have to swallow.

Hope you have managed a restful afternoon, I think being home is so much more relaxing.

    Hi Nina60,

Sorry to read that you are having a rough time.

Have you tried co-codamol for the pain? Also, I was told, dont wait till you are in pain before you take a painkiller, it's more effective to control pain by preventing it, so take painkillers regularly , as per the advice on the packet of course, for a few days to get you over the worst.

With the injections, I did mine by picking up a wedge of fat on my tummy ( not hard to find!), and putting the jab in vertically, not at an angle. Most did not hurt or cause any discomfort. Had a nice series of little purple circles where they went in, but they faded quickly. Different side each time so you dont get sore.

I hope your recovery is rapid from here. I found I felt better day by day, and soon had to remember not to overdo it, hopefully the same will apply to you.

    Sending hugs x
