cyst rupture or uterine cancer?

I am a grandmother in my early 70s and generally fit and well. Not on any medications. Currently on holiday in UK with my husband. Two days ago we were out shopping . It was  a hot afternoon and as  husband rushed ahead, I felt  a sharp pain in my left side just below the waist and told him to slow down as he was giving me a stitch. The pain only lasted a couple of minutes. Five minutes later I felt something trickling down out below which was a surprise as I am not  incontinent.  I went to the bathroom when I got home and I was leaking  a pinkish water from my vagina. ( I checked it was not urine and also it was odourless.)When I stood up , more flooded out. I was not sure what to do but it slowed down later and I decided to wait for to the next day and see how it developed as I was in no pain.

Next morning  it seemed to have stopped but then it started gushing out again. I managed to get some sanitary  pads from the corner shop but it wasn't stopping. It looked like coloured water.  The  flooding got worse and by late afternoon it was containing red blood.  So l phoned 111 , we are in a rural area miles from any A and E and it was Sunday night. They sent an ambulance because of the blood loss.  The crew examined me very carefully and said I was very fit and healthy, nothing wrong with me. . Because of the bleeding they offered to take me into A and E but said it was really busy there and I could expect to wait several  hours to be seen. The flooding had started to slow down by then so l decided to wait for the morning and pay for a taxi to go there. I woke  this morning and it has all stopped and I am  completely back to normal. It seemed pointless  to turn up at A and E fit and well with nothing obviously wrong with me so I  have made an appointment with my GP as soon as I return home next week.

Obviously any vaginal bleeding at my age needs  urgently checking  out and I looked it up and found that  a pinkish watery discharge is an early sign of uterine cancer. So I know I need tests for a diagnosis  but this was not really a discharge, more like a mini flood and has all stopped  and I am back to normal. . So I wondered  if maybe a cyst had burst and this was was fluid escaping or maybe it was a polyp. But it seems burst cysts are really painful and this was not.  I know I have to have for tests and am steeling for the worst and  hoping for the best. But meanwhile has anyone here had a similar experience?

  • Just an update. I went to see my GP when I got home from holiday last week snd was referred for a series of ultrasounds , both pelvic and kidneys  (in case I had a kidney stone.) I have been waiting for the appointment to come through. Meanwhile I had a urine test which showed a Uti and was prescribed an antibiotic nitrofurantoin Which I have just finished taking. (Horrid side effects, never again). No  bleeds since, for over a week and was breathing  a sigh of temporary relief. Then this morning I watered my tomato plants with a 2 gallon can, came indoors and realised i was bleeding. again. it was not like a discharge or period bleed but like a cut and bright red blood.

I went off  to A and  aD where nice lady doctor checked me out. I had a series of blood tests, all usual signs heslthy, a urine test - some residual infection, kidney scan- no stones. Then she gave me a "speculum" check of my vagina and she said she found a small amount of blood. She has referred me for a gynae exam. I do not know what to think. I have to ask, is it signficant  that I was bleeding   today like  from a cut or as if I had ruptured something.?  Could it be due to carrying a 2 gallon can?  What is uterine  bleeding like? Is it like that? Dripping and bright red like you cut your finger. It soon stopped before I got to hospital but started again after she examined me internally.

I realise  I am probably clutching at straws. Has  anyone been referred for this sort of bleeding and had it be a polyp?. I am so depressed and worried.

  • Hi nightingale,

my bleeds were watery or dark and really heavy before my op. try not to worry too much, our minds always jump to the worse case scenario when usually there is a list of more likely non serious causes. If you want to chat to a medic about what those could be you can phone the helpline on 0808 808 0000 when it opens at 8, just ask to speak to a nurse.

do you have your appointment in yet? I hope you done have to wait too long.

    lots of love

  • Hi Nightingale,

It could be that something is being irritated by carrying heavy things. And things are complicated with having a UTI. When I was diagnosed the doctor thought it was a UTI, but I thought differently!! He said to me 'Something's going on down there but I don't know what'.

I had one mucus, pink tinged blob, then 3 weeks later a streak of blood, at which point I went to the doctor.(I had been carrying my 2 year old grand daughter around that day). I contented myself with the fact I couldn't have gone any quicker to see about it, and you haven't hung around, either. Funny thing, I had no more bleeds until my operation ( 2 months after)!!

Hope you know soon what the problem is. xxxxxx

    • I think what is worrying me now is that given my age, any vaginal bleed seems unlikely to be caused by any of the standard list of non cancerous reasons eg vaginal atrophy bleeding triggered by penetrative sex ,-:haven't had that for a while - or thickened endometrial lining - assume that is for women who have been through menopause quite recently ditto polyps.  I assume I am pretty well dried up now I am in my early 70s , and as i never had anything like this previously, so the non cancerous reasons less likely. Is that realistic?

Hi nightingale. My symptoms were a couple of pale pink tinged mucus when I wiped over a couple of months then clear discharge streaked with bright red blood again when I wiped but I honestly thought I had caught myself with my fingernail. Two days later I had a period like bleed, brownish blood over two days which then made me contact the doctor. I went through the menopause six years ago with nothing since this so it was unusual..no pain attached though. Hope you managed to get your symptoms sorted out very soon. Praying for you. God bless.

  • Hi nightingale,

You are probably right, but right up until after my biopsy the consultant thought I might have vaginal dryness!! Only the tests and biopsy can actually tell them for sure what is going on.   xxxxxxx

  • Well A&E doctor last week said still urine test showed  had residual UTI and recommended new  antibiotic .Also found small amount of blood  in vagina and recommended  for a 2ww referral to Gynae. A&E doctor was lovely. said she could not diagnose causes but there were several possible, not all malignant. She said I should be concerned but not yet seriously alarmed and I was overall very healthy. I went to own GP surgery today with some questions and saw young female locum. I wanted to ask if pink urine i am now peeing meant still had  kidney infection, (which was diagnosed by urine test at time of original problem in late May..)  Problem is on occasions I seem to be losing blood from vagina as well as in pee. (I am actually wondering if may have very tiny fistula from bladder to vagina)

Locum had my A&E records up and said the CT scan showed your kidneys are clear. And how do you know the blood is not coming from your vagina?. I said because I am peeing pinkish urine. And because I have been wearing a pad and when it is pink urine it leaves a small pink patch next to my bladder. vagina opening is lower down. (Originally  thought bloody fluid was coming from vagina then decided it was bladder but difficult to tell as it was running out , assumed  it had been released by backed up kidney /ureter freed when stone moved.) She looked sceptical and said well there may be an infection still in your bladder .

I asked about  possible causes of blood in vagina and she said she could not speculate and looked serious. I said I was getting very worried and asked if there was anything she could recommend to help with that. She said I should go and ask my local pharmacist. If I was trying to stay calm and positive I did not come out that way. She gave a definite impression she thought I probably had cancer.  She was not prepared to  discuss anything at all.  Came out feeling very gloomy indeed.
