Brachytherapy or external beam therapy or chemotherapy

Hi all,

I arrived at hospital today for 3 sessions of brachytherapy only to be advised that 5 weeks of external beam radiotherapy should have first been discussed as an alternative (but hadn’t been).

I was unable to proceed with treatment as consent therefore not secure.

My results from hysterectomy on 9 January were stage 1a, grade 3 with substantial lymph vascular space invasion.

Has anyone been given the two radiotherapy options with similar pathology results please and what did you decide or were recommended?

Thanks much in advance

  • Have you had any issues with lymphedema?  One of the reasons my surgeon removed 5 pelvic lymph nodes and no para aortic nodes was to cut down the chance of lymphedema.  The radiation targeted other pelvic lymph nodes and the vaginal cuff.

  • No DidiOntario - no problems whatsoever with surgery or biopsy . My oncologist was quite startled by the number that were removed but they don’t know how many they will find as tissue is removed apparently. Absolutely no internal pain whatsoever after hysterectomy which seems miraculous to me but hopefully reassuring to others on the forum .

  • That sounds very positive but I would worry about the vaginal cuff healing, particularly as I have asthma and diabetes. The first in relation to getting bad coughs - and the diabetes in relation to slow-healing. Apparently if this area doesn't heal properly it can cause major issues.
