Brachytherapy or external beam therapy or chemotherapy

Hi all,

I arrived at hospital today for 3 sessions of brachytherapy only to be advised that 5 weeks of external beam radiotherapy should have first been discussed as an alternative (but hadn’t been).

I was unable to proceed with treatment as consent therefore not secure.

My results from hysterectomy on 9 January were stage 1a, grade 3 with substantial lymph vascular space invasion.

Has anyone been given the two radiotherapy options with similar pathology results please and what did you decide or were recommended?

Thanks much in advance

  • Oh you poor thing, how frustrating re the holiday, and also not having a clear treatment plan to date. Hopefully this is/will be sorted quickly. Wishing you well

  • Hi Beepeep

I was diagnosed December 2021 following with hysterectomy January 2022 for Grade 3 Serous, Stage 1a  Endometrial cancer. My treatment was optional chemotherapy which I decided to take and recommended 3 session brachytherapy. I started chemo in March and it ended in June 2022, it wasn't until August 2022 that my appointments came through for the brachytherapy so if you were to start the chemotherapy soon, which you should do, then you would have completed the treatment by August definitely but I don't know about the brachytherapy  or external beam radiotherapy, or which way round they intend to do treatment , please discuss with them, It may be that they can work around your holiday dates?

  • Hi Madesp, thank you so much for sharing this. Very interesting to read that chemotherapy was optional and so it looks as though I have a tricky decision ahead. I am learning here that I need to ask on Thursday what type of cancer I have in addition to the grade and stage and if you don’t mind, might post again asking a few more questions on this thread ( although no pressure to reply of course). It is so helpful to hear from others with the same or similar diagnosis . I do hope you are feeling well. Sending very best wishes .

  • Hi again, yes please do ask any questions that come to mind as often as you want, my cancer was contained within a polyp and luckily hadn't spread, hence staged at 1a. I was very worried as it was a Grade 3 for which is an aggressive type and also unpredictable according to my oncologist so when the optional chemo was offered I had to make a decision and posting on this group helped me in that. I am feeling very well and if it helps you can read my story and timeline by clicking on my username, it's all there. Wishing you the best of luck and you've made the best start by joining this group. X

  • I have had a call with the Cancer center and I have been restaged as Grade 2 and stage 1b I had 2 left Lymph nodes  removed and no Cancer was found , I am now waiting for a call for the dates for 3 x Brachytherapy ..Hope your feeling better moving forward and get on that holiday as soon as I have finished treatment I will be definitely booking a holiday .x

  • That is really good news Linda and thank you . Interestingly I had 30 lymph nodes removed during hysterectomy - a lot but all fine .

  • Hi Beepep

Wow 30 glad your feeling OK, I have gone from thinking I would need Chemo and External Radiotherapy to now  3 x Brachytherapy and the last call the Dr said "we can never guarantee but it's very unlikely that this type of cancer will bother you".. I didn't even realise until then that we could have different types!. Good luck at your appointment and hopefully you get all your questions answered xx

    • That is really reassuring Linda. So pleased for you. I shall update my profile now in case my latest info helps others but I have opted for chemo starting soon then 3 x brachytherapy.
  • Interesting isn’t it Jane - as I had 30 lymph nodes removed and all fine , external beam therapy was ruled out and I have opted for chemo for the exact reasons you have explained. Although no cancer in the cervix found, still recommended brachytherapy. I am at peace with it all now and I have found this thread particularly helpful in ensuring I have considered all options and do hope these exchanges help others . Not sure if we can amend the subject heading to include chemo ? ( or lymph space invasion)

Thank you so much for all the info provided and now bracing myself for chemo but first a sunny day out we hope for my son’s 27th birthday then a few days holiday Blush
    very best wishes

  • Hi Beepeep

If you go to your original post and click on More, there will be an option to edit your post- you can then change the heading.
