Lynch Syndrome

I'm currently waiting for my hysterectomy op, scheduled for 6 October, after a diagnosis of endometrial cancer.  MRI and CT scans were clear and I've been provisionally staged at 1a. My consultant oncologist has recommended testing for Lynch Syndrome as I have hardly any of the risk factors. On the one hand she is being very thorough. But naturally, I'm concerned that a positive result could mean an increased risk of other cancers in the future. All 'ifs' and 'buts' at the moment, just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience.

  • Hi Shelley, I'll pm you x

  • Hi I've just been told the same thing as my Gran had Endometrial Cancer at a similar age to me and that side of the family are rife with cancers. I have a video call booked with the Genetics department in November. I was told today if positive I would need regular colonoscopies which doesn't fill me with great joy. However, the way I see it I'm in the fortunate position of being rid of my cancer with this op because it was found early - screening is the best preventative I reckon and better than having to constantly having to fight your case to be seen/screened by GP. I hope your op goes well next week.

  • Hi Cakenport. This endometrial cancer throws up some really complex issues doesn't it! Thanks for your good wishes for my op. I'm having a total abdominal hysterectomy - uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries are all going but no need for them at 69 years of age. The genetics testing will be done post op so interested to see what it reveals.

  • Ejax, JFYI the genealogy company 23 and Me do a test which includes health screening (including BRCA) for £149.

  • Thanks for that Marmite ...I will look into it as my maternal side of the family do have a history of breast and ovarian cancer.
