Hi I was told on Thursday I have endometrial cancer and I can't get my head around it. I keep crying. My nurse is going to ring me tomorrow with some dates for Scans. What another worry is is that I'm very obese and I keep thinking because of this they will have trouble with tests and operations. I'm 57 have always had pcos and never had a child  I'm not the sort of person to talk to anyone about my feelings thats why I've joined this group

  • Hi thank you I have ordered some books going for my ct scan tomorrow still waiting for a date for my open MRI

  • I was really interested to read your post as I think my surgery will go the same way as yours. How did you find the recovery from an open operation? My mobility isn't great anyway as I have arthritis in both knees and walk with a stick but I am dreading the surgery now to be honest.

  • Hi I too would like to know the recovery rate from open surgery as when I saw my surgeon 2 weeks ago he frightened the life out of me by saying if I had open surgery I would be in hospital 2 to 3 months. Went for all my pre surgery checks last week got to go and see surgeon next week but I think they are going to ask me to lose weight first. I too have osteoarthritis in both knees and walk with a stick and have sleep apena. I got a call today saying I've got to go for a echocardiogram next Saturday

  • WOW that seems a really long time to have to stay in hospital. I hope it doesn't come to that !! I had an echo as part of my pre op and was lucky that it was fine. Fingers crossed yours will be too .

  • Hi  I had my surgery done open and had it done on the Monday spent the night on hdu then was out of bed and sat in chair Tuesday, walking round on Wednesday and home Thursday evening.  I had a morphine pump which I used a bit the first night then didn’t use it much and they took it out Wednesday morning and a rectus sheath that goes under the skin in your stomach for pain relief which was taken out the day I came home.  I was sent home with codine which I didn’t use managed with just paracetamol or ibuprofen.  I was out and about the weekend I came home just made sure not to over do it.  My wound opened a tiny bit in my belly button but went to the walk in centre and they dressed it and I had no trouble.  I saw my consultant a month after surgery and everything was almost fully healed. • That sounds so much better than I am expecting . I hope I'm as lucky.

  • Thank you Rach_E  as Funkynana said that sounds a lot better I dont know if my surgeon was saying that to make me lose weight quickly. I also have PCOS which makes it hard to lose weight quickly all my weight is round my middle, when I saw the anaesthetist on Friday she said I'm the ideal size on top and she felt down my back and said she could feel my spine which was good, good for what I dont know, also they said I might not have my oparation at Guys but at Barts as they might be more happy with doing the OP on me. The oparation is more frightening than the cancer x

  • No worries always happy to try and help.  I had my surgery in Liverpool Women’s hospital and they didn’t really say much.  The doctor that gave me the news wasn’t my consultant and he just said we will do the pre op have the tests done then it’s up to the anaesthetist what happens.  I carry most of my weight around my middle but the doctor just said see what happens.  I don’t think it helped that the doctor that gave me the news worked more on the obstetrics side of things rather then gynaecology so he was just reading what was on the screen. • I was a bit naive when it came to how painful it was after surgery. I'd had two caesarians previously and obviously with a newborn you have to get on with it. I thought it would be almost the same after the hysterectomy forgetting that I was 30 years older and have other health issues! I have non alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver and can't take painkillers as they're processed through the liver. I also have fibromyalgia which didn't help. I think that if you can take whatever pain relief they offer you will be fine. The thing I struggled with most was getting out of bed as it makes you use your stomach muscles. A week after my surgery we went to an RHS garden show. I rented a mobility scooter as there was a lot of walking. One thing I wasn't warned about was the effect of the surgery on the bowel. Nine months after the surgery I am still having pain and urgency. Apparently the bowel doesn't like being manhandled and because of my adhesions there was a lot of manhandling! I don't want to be the voice of doom but it's things I wish I'd been warned about.

  • Hi ladies, Don’t know if this will help, but I was advised by the nurse about getting out of bed. Roll to the side of the bed so you are also resting on your side and then use your arm to push up to a sitting position then you can swing your legs out. I had keyhole surgery but I’m guessing it might work for open surgery too.
