TNBC recurrence

Hello all,

I was first diagnosed in 2023. I was treated with chemo, lumpectomy and radiotherapy.

Now, almost 3 years later, comes the recurrence. I am still waiting for the PET scan to see if there are metastasis, but I'm feeling really down right now. The first time the doctor seemed very optimistic, but this time not at all.

What I really want to know is if there are some positive experiences after a TNBC recurrence?

Thank you so much...

  • I am sorry you are facing a recurrence. I don’t have quite the same story, but I hope my experience can give you some hope. I was first diagnosed with TNBC in Feb 2022 and treated with lumpectomy, chemo and radiotherapy. It was thought to be early stage, not in my lymph nodes but I did have vascular invasion at the tumour site. In the late summer of the same year, whilst having chemo, I suffered what turned out to be diverticulitis. My oncology team decided to do a staging scan, not expecting to find anything. I had a secondary tumour in my liver. They initially ablated it, but it recurred within my liver and multiplied. Fortunately my tumours were PD-L1 positive so I was a candidate for the immunotherapy drug Pembrolizumab. I think about 40% of TNBC cases express this protein. After treatment with pembro and more chemo, and a clean up ablation, I have been in remission for 2 years and counting, not on any treatment. There are several treatments for tnbc that weren’t around a few years ago. Any doom and gloom statistics you might find tend to be of people who were diagnosed too early to benefit from these treatments. Hopefully something will work for you too,
