Hi all, I'm new to the group. I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer last month and had my first round of Chemo last Wednesday. I guess I'm still not sure of anything at the moment. I have signed myself off work for the past week but today is day 8 and I really don't know what to do for the best. I have two young children a boy 11 and a girl 8. My husband feels that I will need my strength to carry out the day to day tasks and that adding work to the equation will really tire me out.  My manager said that it's up to me and I should do whatever I feel is best but I'm worried about the financial side of things. I'm not sure how it works with SSP and whether they would say that I'm not entitled and am fit for work. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

  • Hi Mazoo and welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to hear what is happening for you and how you are feeling. I wonder if you felt able to you could pick up the phone and speak to one of the Macmillan Advisors as they will be able to tell you all about SSP and maybe other benefits that you may be entitled to so dont hesitate to pick up the phone and put your mind at rest. 08088080000.

  • I also have TNBC and am having chemo. Chemo hits everyone slightly differently and some people can work at least some of the time. Do you have a good enough relationship with your employer to discuss whether reducing hours and working flexibly is an option? On EC chemo I have a small number of days when I don’t think I could have worked at all, had I had to, and many when I was ok mentally but might have struggled had physical effort or travel been involved

  • Hi thanks for the reply. My employer is good and understands. I'm only part time contract 12hrs but work more to help with living costs. My employer has said that it's up to me and that my job will be there when I feel ready. I spoke to my GP surgery yesterday and they agreed to sign me off for a month to start with then renew if necessary. I also spoke with HR as I work for the Co-op and they do a top up on sick pay. They confirmed that I have 45.6hrs of sick pay remaining. Not very much but better than nothing I guess. I know SSP is not very much at all so really need to look into anything else that I might be entitled to though with my husband in full time employment I doubt there will be much help.
