On Antibiotics while given Chemo?

Hello to all of you amazing souls, so much love and respect to each of you as you continue or reflect on your journey with TNBC.  I am grateful to find this group as I have recently moved to my Parents for the next few months to support them as Mum deepens into her treatment...almost halfway there at this point.

She is currently having weekly Carboplatin and Paclitaxil infusions alongside fortnightly Immunotherapy.  Two days ago she went a bit downhill with a UTI and has spent the last two nights in Hospital with 24 hrs IV Antibiotics, to be followed with a week of oral antibiotics. She is feeling a whole heaps better although yesterday the Doctor who has been present said she wouldn't be having her Chemo scheduled for tomorrow, which sat right with me given what her body's just been through and no doubt where her gut health is at due to antibiotics. However the Oncology nurse came to visit later yesterday afternoon and said they would be giving it to her afterall. Mum queried this given what the Doctor had said, so the nurse rang the Oncolist and confirmed they would still give her Chemo this week regardless.

Just curious if anyone here has been on Antibiotics while being administered Chemo and whether this has been ok or created any problems for anyone? Not sure what the exact antibiotics are but will find out today.

It seems a lot for her body to take in a week, any advice, guidance, experiences hugely appreciated. Slightly urgent at this point, thanks so much.

  • Hi

My own cancer was different to your Mums but I was on the same chemotherapy- carboplatin and paclitaxel. I also had an infection that led to me being taken in on sepsis alert and it turned out that the cause was a UTI. I had to go into hospital and I was given lots of tests plus IV antibiotics. I was then given more antibiotics before being allowed to go home. It was complicated by the fact that my bloods also showed issues.

I became neutropenic and it was not until the very last minute (I was sat in the chemo chair ready) that my levels got up into a safe range for the chemo to go ahead. I do understand that it can seem a lot to go through  but I would feel reassured that the consultant if feeling that it is safe to go ahead with the chemo. It is always right to ask for further reassurance when being unsure about things.

I hope that Mum has now had her chemo and is recovering from this cycle.

    Jane
